How Tidmouth Was Built, Part Two

Next Part: Part Three

Previous Part: Part One

Plot

Edward tells Thomas about how two controllers struck a deal to build a station, and how he and his friends were sent to work on the construction.

Script

(Change from color to black and white)

Narrator Edward: The year is 1923. The controllers of two rival companies, the Sodor & Mainland Railway and the Wellsworth, Suddery, and Knapford Railway, have struck a deal to jointly build and share a large station at Tidmouth.

(Two men, standing next to a lawyer reading a contract, shake hands)

Narrator Edward: This station was to be larger than any other, able to handle six trains at any given time.

(Image of complete Tidmouth, with passenger flooding the platforms and locmotives pulling in and out)

Narrator Edward: But, of course, that was a long way off. At preesent, it was just an empty lot with some rail lines running through it.

(Fade to color and an empty lot with several cars of bricks and stone sitting nearby)

Narrator Edward: There were four engines who were sent to build that station, all from the Sodor and Mainland. There was Sammy . . .

(Cut to a light grey Q1 tank engine with S&M #4 on his boiler, resting and smiling)

Narrator Edward: There was Zachariah . . .

(Cut to a brown H15 tender engine with S&M #3 on his tender, at a water tower)

Narrator Edward: There was Abby . . .

(Cut to a red 4F tender engine with S&M #2 on her tender, shunting trucks of slate)

Narrator Edward: And lastly, there was a cocky little tender engine, still very young at the age of 18 . . .

(Cut to a younger looking Edward, with S&M #1' painted on his tender, steaming down the line towards Tidmouth)

Narrator Edward: And that engine was me.

(Cut to present)

Thomas: You helped build Tdmouth station? Wow!

Edward: Yes, I did.

(Thomas chuckles)

Edward: What is it, Thomas?

Thomas: It's just that I'm having a hard time imagining you that young!

Edward: (Smiling) Well, maybe you'll get more used to it. My story is only just begining.

(Cut back to Edward, Abby, Zachariah, and Sammy shunting trucks)

Narrator Edward: We were good friends, which was part of the reason we were picked. Sammy was the joker of the group. We all laughed at his jokes, but sometimes he went a little too far.

(The engines all laugh at Sammy, who has told a joke we can not hear)

Narrator Edward: Zachariah was a hard worker. He was no nonsense, felt that work was more important than pleasure. I learned a lot from him.

(Zachariah pulls out with a long line of trucks)

Narrator Edward: (Slighly sad) Abby was a very kind and gentle engine. She had been my best friend since I had been built. She was very dependable, the kind you knew would get the job done.

(Abby pulls out of the station)

Narrator Edward: And I was . . . well, I was a lot like you, Thomas. Very cheeky, playful, but I tried to my work well. I guess you could call me the leader of our little group. A great human once said: "Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them." That last line was going to mean a lot to me, but I didn't know it yet.

(Edward, all alone, leaves the station with the last line of trucks)
