FanFic: The Sodor Engines Characters: Stephen

Stephen was a large tank engine who arrived for loan in 1976.

History

Stephen was built in 1897 as an E4 for the London, Brighton, and South Coast Railway. He was essentially used as a loan engine, moving from place to place many times during his life. Because he was always a stranger, he was treated as an outcast by other steam engines and later teased by diesel engines for being obsolete. Stephen became worried about his future, as well as developing an instinctive distrust of other steam engines.

Stephen arrived on Sodor with Diesel 10 in 1976, and the two joined forces. Stephen spied on the other engines, learning much of their plans, and important information. To them, he appeared kind, considerate, and helpful, but Thomas saw through his disguise. Stephen eventually revealed himself by wrecking Duck in order to capture Lady.

Later, when Diesel 10 and his cronies were chasing Thomas and his friends, Stephen had to decide whose side he was truly on. Aided by Edward, he decided to help Thomas. He caught up with Thomas and his companions just as they were about to be overtaken by the diesels. He gave Percy much-needed coal, and then shunted oil trucks onto the bridge they had just crossed, burning it, and leaving him at the mercy of Diesel 10. Diesel 10 shoved him off what was left of the bridge with his claw, which Thomas witnessed. In a deleted scene, a young engine finds Stephen and wonders how he got there.

Personality

Stephen was a bitter and cruel individual. However, he did have a good heart, and proved this by sacrificing himself.

Stephen is based on an LB&SC E4 locomotive.
