May the Yellow Engine and Friends (aka May's Sodor Adventures in UK and Australia programs) is a US/Canada show based on Thomas and Friends. It shows the adventures of a cute, yellow tender engine called May, her friends Kelly, Ash, and Brock, her brothers Thomas Jr., and Stancy, and her parents Thomas and Molly.

Main
- May is the main protagonist of the series. She mostly takes on her mother Molly - smart and stylish - with some cheekiness on her father's side. May is also plucky, cheerful, and adventurous. May has three coaches called Allen, Blake and Chelsea. May is aged 15, and number 100.
- Thomas, Jr. is May's younger brother. He is named in honor of his father. Thomas Jr. considers himself as to be station pilot, and appears to have a crush on Kelly, whom he vomits on when she talks to him, taking after his father. He likes pulling the mail. Thomas Jr. is aged 14.
- Kelly is May's best friend, and one of the youngest members of the Fat Controller's engine team. Although slightly naive and easily scared, Kelly can prove what her parents might not do. Kelly is aged 13, and number 66.
- Victoria is a girl with a crush on Thomas Jr. She's a big hippie and is often at times very stupid. Her best friends are Gloria, May and Kelly. Victoria is aged 16, and number 123.
- Ash is May's boyfriend. He's one of the older engines - cool, stylish, yet occasionally stubborn, Ash is loyal to his friends, but sometimes has a short temper. He's best friends with Thomas Jr. Ash is aged 15.
- Brock is a steam tram engine. He's the oldest of the group (besides Victoria), and is shown quite interested in girls. Brock is aged 16, and number 700.
- Thomas is May's father. He's shown to worry about his daughter's sake, and tries to keep her out of danger.
- Molly is May's mother, and Thomas' wife. Out of the mothers, Molly seems close enough to her daughter.
- Stancy is May and Thomas Jr.'s younger brother. Molly thought it would be nice for him to be named after Thomas' friends Stanley and Percy. He's called "Stancy" for short, and as shown, May and Thomas Jr. love their little brother deeply. Stancy is aged five.
- Claude is May and Thomas Jr.'s younger sister, and Stancy's twin sister. She is named after the range of LNER Claud Hamiltons. Claude is aged five, like Stancy.
- Allan, Blake and Chelsea are May's coaches. Allan and Blake can only take passengers, but Chelsea can take passengers, luggage, and the guard. Allan, Blake and Chelsea are aged 18, 17 and 19, respectively.

- Percy, Stanley, and Toby are Thomas' best friends and fathers of Kelly, Ash, and Brock, respectively.
- Matthew is a kind-hearted blue tender engine. He serves as a banker on Gordon's hill, and is a good friend to the younger engines. He has a crush on Victoria. Matthew is aged 21, and number 200.
- Daniel is a main line engine, and Victoria's older brother. Daniel takes mixed traffic trains, and tries to help Thomas Jr. get Victoria away from him. Daniel is aged 18 and number 333.
- Gloria is Gordon's oldest daughter. Her gullible boyfriend is Daniel. Gloria likes being beautiful ans intelligent at the same time, and the color blue. Gloria is aged 18, and number 462.
- Orian is Gordon's older son. He likes showing off and looking his best. Orian does not like being called a snob, being annoyed, and ridiculous ideas. Orian dislikes tank engines, mostly Thomas Jr. He is aged 16, and number 400.
- Domanic, Gail, and Dawna are Gordon's youngest son and daughters. They are aged 15 (Domanic), 13 (Gail), and 12 (Dawna), respectively, and numbers 264 (Domanic) and 62 (Gail).
- Brendan is May's ex-boyfriend. He tries to show what he can do, but usually fails. Although they broke up, May and Brendan are still somewhat friends. Josh is aged 15, and is number 555.
- Billy is Kelly's younger brother. He's like his father at a young age, but a lot more clumsier. Little else is known about him for now. Billy is aged 10, the youngest of the engines, and number 600.
- Doug is a Great Western pannier tank engine. He is Duck's son, and a loyal, wise engine and a hard worker who does his work without fuss. Doug is aged 17, and number 88.
- Tavish and Kenna are Scottish goods engines, and the only six-coupled tender engines so far. They are Donald's son and Douglas' daughter. Tavish is aged 17 and number 900, and Kenna 16, number 1000.
- Paul is a Great Western tank engine. He is rough and cocky, and is a friendly-rival to Thomas Jr. Paul might have feelings for Kenna. Paul is aged 17 and number 1100.
- Falcon is Brendan's cousin. He's a very wise engine, and cautious for any dangers on the track. Falcon is aged 18 and number 82.
- Alex is a kind-hearted, hard-working LMS tank engine. He is extremely loyal to his friends, even toward Thomas Jr. Alex is aged 17.
- Elizabeth is a streamlined visiting engine. She is spoiled, haughty and arrogant, and believes tank engines are useless, and is rivaled with Orian. Elizabeth is aged 16.
- Shelley is a sassy and sarcastic quarry diesel. She rearranges trucks about the quarry and full of her ideas, but sometimes can annoy Thomas Jr. Shelley is aged 14.
- Bob is the new Sodor Steamworks manager. He sometimes has to keep an eye on Helen, Kevin's daughter, but does have a small crush on her. Bob is aged 19.
- Hawk is a mainline diesel engine. He is loyal and friendly to fellow steam engines, even Thomas Jr. can't help but like him. Hawk is aged 18.
- April is a goth engine. She's moody and sarcastic, but cares for the other engines and will do anything to help them. April is aged 15.
- Drew, Jessie, and James are the main antagonists of the series. Drew has a crush on May, who rejects him many times. Jessie and James are siblings. Drew is aged 17, Jessie and James are aged 16.
- Richard is an LNER Holden B12. Unlike his father, Alfred, Richard is the white sheep in his family, and is extremely loyal to fellow steam engines. At the movie's climax, he gave up his life to defeat his father. Richard is aged 16 (at death), and number 121.
- Dewar and Moira are Richard's older brother and sister. Both are evil like Alfred. Dewar was killed in a rock slide, and Moira had a change of heart at the movie's climax. Dewar is aged 21 (at death), and Moira age 17 and number 56.

- Thomas Jr.: A New Hero - The North Western Railway is in danger of closing, so it's up to six engine children (May, Thomas Jr., Kelly, Brock, Ash and Victoria) to venture to the National Railway Museum to retrieve legendary engines to save Sodor. However, Alfred the Holden B12 is back for revenge and, would do anything to stop their plans and have Sodor closed for good. Can Thomas Jr. overcome his fears and prove himself a Sodor railway member?
