Part Eight: A Suprise For Edward

Plot

Edward concludes his story, and recieves a pleasant suprise.

Script

(Cut to the present)

Narrator: The was a loud, collective gasp. Edward looked around. He was suprised to see that many engines had gathered around the sheds and were listening intently.

Edward: You guys were really listening?

Percy: Yeah! It's a great story!

Duck: Except, of course, for the evil Great Westerner. I've met his brother, City of Truro. I'd hardly believe it of a 3700 . . .

Emily: What happened next?

(Cut back to 1923)

Narrator Edward: I collected the glass and took it back down the mountain. Sammy, Zachariah, and I completed the station on time.

(Cut to an old black and whie photograph. Edward, Zachariah, and Sammy are smiling at the grand opening, but you can tell their hearts aren't in it)

Narrator Edward: Abby and City of Wellsworth were recovered and . . . scrapped.

(Cut to a second photograph, as Edward looks away as what's left of Abby and City of Wellsworth is lifted from the quarry ground)

(Cut back to the present)

Edward: (Sighs) If I had just held out for a little bit longer, Abby would have been safe. But I wasn't strong or brave enough. I let a friend die. I've never really forgiven myself about that.

Thomas: You did the best you could, Edward.

Narrator: Meanwhile, preparations continued as usual. When the day of the celebration finally arrived, everything was ready.

(Rosie and Toby pull coaches into the station, while Gordon stands proudly in Platform 1)

Narrator: Edward was happy to see two old friends in Platforms 4 and 5.

Edward: Zachariah and Sammy! What are you two doing here?

Zachariah: Sammy and I were rescued by a heritage railway. Sir Topham Hatt asked if we could come for the anniversary. We could, and here we are.

Narrator: Edward felt better to have his two friends there. He rolled into Platform 2, and watched as all of the engines arrived. Every single line was filled, except for Platfrom 3. Edward inquired about this to Sir Topham Hatt.

Edward: Why is the line clear? No more engines will be coming.

Narrator: But he jsut smiled knowingly and climbed onto the podium to address the crowd.

Sir Topham Hatt: We are here to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the construction of Tidmouth station. it was built, in 1923, by four very brave engines. They were faced with many obstacles, but they never gave up. Ii is becuase of them that the station is here at all. YOu can see three of them right now. They are Edward, Zachariah, and Sammy.

(Everyone cheers)

Sir Topham Hatt: But there was a fourth engine. Her name is Abby.

Narrator: As if on cue, a long, low whistle echoed through the station. The engiens gasped. A cloud obscured the platforms, rising up to the glass roof that had almost caused her death over fifty years before. Then, as the steam cleared, there sat Abby, as good as new, or possibly better.

Edward, Zachariah, and Sammy: Abby?!

Abby: That's right.

Sir Topham Hatt: I was researching the history of this station when I discovered the story of the engines who built it. After inquiring about Abby, I was pleased to discover that she hadn't been scrapped, but simply dumped in the scrapyard. I promptly bought her and had her restored, to permanantly work on the railway.

Edward: I can't believe you're really here!

Abby: Neither can I.

Edward: Look, I'm really sorry about-

Abby: You're forgiven. I understand completely and I'm not mad at all.

Narrator: Sir Topham Hatt had stepped down from the podium and was looking expectingly at Edward, almost as if he was reading his thoughts. Edward rolled forward.

Edward: I just want everyone to know that no matter who you are, where you came from, how old you are, how big you are, or any other of a million factors, I'm glad you're here on the island.

(Everyone cheers)

(End credits roll)
