Toby is an old tram engine.

History

Toby was built in 1916 to work in a harbor with his brothers. There, he earned a reputation as a reliable engine and a hard worker. He was later transferred to a branch line which he worked for about fifty years with his two coaches Henrietta and Victoria. While taking a special, Thomas met Toby and later convinced Sir Topham Hatt to buy him.

Since his arrival on Sodor, Toby has had many adventures. Once, he nearly crashed after taking too many lumber trucks. Later, he helped rescue Elsie the luggage van from scrap.

Toby helped Thomas rescue Lady from Diesel 10, and was present at their final confrontation. On the trip to the National Railway Museum, Toby, along with Edward, proved to Alex that he wasn't too old to be really useful.

Toby now runs suburban passenger trains with Thomas. He is also the only engine allowed to pull stone trucks along the tramway to Anopha Quarry (although Mavis sometimes helps him).

Personality

Toby is friendly, helpful, and almost as wise as Edward. He can get very worried over small things and is sometime unsure if he is really useful.

Toby is based on a J70 tram.
