FanFic:The Sodor Engines Characters

From TrainSpottingWorld, for Rail fans everywhere

Over the years, The Sodor Engines has introduced many characters.

Steam Engines

Thomas (NWR #1)

Thomas is a little blue tank engine based on the SR E2 class locomotive and is the unofficial protagonist of the series. Thomas can be cheeky and troublesome, but he means well and has a good heart. Thomas was originally a shunter until he had to lend a hand on the NWR's opening day. Sir Topham Hatt saw a useful engine in him and let him run suburban passenger trains.

Edward (S&M #1, NWR #2)

Edward is a kind old blue engine. The only NW locomotive truly Sudrian in ancestry, Edward was built for the Sodor and Mainland Railway. Edward is happy to help and give advice. Sometimes he feels insecure about his age, especially when the younger engines tease him. Edward runs light passenger and goods trains on the main line. Edward is based on a modified "Larger Seagull".

Henry (NWR #3)

Henry is a green tender engine. He is strong but is sometimes sickly. This is the result of the fact that he was a failed experimental A1 that the NWR bought for a very low price. Despite his generally stuck-up manner, Henry likes to help other engines and is a good engine at heart. Henry loves nature, especially the forest.

Gordon (NWR #4)

Gordon is a strong blue express engine. He is very dignified and has a generally aloof manner. He is very proud of the fact that he is related to many famous engines, such as the Flying Scotsman. Gordon is based on the LNER A1 class.

James (NWR #5)

James is a vain red tender engine based on a class 27 locomotive. He loves staying clean and thinks very highly of himself. James thinks he should only take certain trains, and his conceitedness can get him into trouble.

Percy (NWR #6)

Percy is a little green saddle tank engine. He is not based on any particular locomotive class. Percy is best friends with Thomas, and can be cheeky like him. Percy runs local freight trains and sometimes helps out Thomas with passengers. Percy can be naive and gullible, which the bigger engines take advantage of.

Toby (NWR #7)

Toby is an old tram engine based on a J70 class. He is very friendly and is almost as wise as Edward. Also like Edward, Toby can be insecure about his age and ability. Toby helps out Thomas with his two coaches, Henrietta and Victoria.

Duck (NWR #8)

Duck is a strong Great Western tank engine. He used to help shunt trucks in the yard, but now he has his own branch line. Duck is clever, witty, and stubborn. He doesn't let any of the other engines tell him what to do. Duck is based on a 57xx tank engine.

Donald & Douglas (NWR #s 9 & 10)

Donald and Douglas are Scottish twins. Sir Topham Hatt only ordered Douglas, but Donald ran away with him to avoid being scrapped. They managed to prove themselves very useful, and Sir Topham Hatt let both stay. The twins can be cheeky, but they are funny and friendly. Donald and Douglas are based on the Caledonian Railway's 812 class.

Oliver (NWR #11)

Oliver is a great western tank engine. He was sent for scrap but escaped with the help of Thomas and Percy. Oliver likes to help out, but can be conceited. Oliver currently helps Duck on his branch line.

Emily (NWR #12)

Emily is a green tender engine. She can be rather bossy, but is always brought down to earth by the mention of her first day. Emily works the main line as a mixed-traffic engine.

Rosie (NWR #14)

Rosie is a little pink tank engine. When she arrived, she was teased by the other engines because she was so small. However, she proved them wrong. She worked as a shunter for a while, but now runs her own branch line. Rosie is chipper and cheeky, and she has a lot of determination. Rosie is based on a USA "Dock Tank" locomotive.

Lily (NWR #15)

Lily is a headstrong tank engine based on the "Hecate" class locomotive. Her heart is in the right place, but she can be very stubborn at times. When she first arrived, she attempted to pull a train of troublesome trucks, ignoring the other engines' advice. After the brakes jammed, she had to ask for help, but was still able to get the trucks to her destination.

John (NWR #16)

John is a 4-6-0 Castle Class locomotive. When he arrived, John was put on the main line. He was eager to pull the express, but when he was given a local passenger train, he forgot half of the stops. John was extremely embarrassed. However, when Henry broke down, John was the only engine who could pull the express, which he did remarkably well.

Murdoch (NWR #17)

Murdoch is a big freight engine who despises loud noise. When he first arrived, he was rude to Gordon for his loudness, and Gordon took a dislike to him. After several days of competing against each other, they put aside their differences and became friends.

Fergus (NWR #18)

Fergus is a railway traction engine. He knows all of the rules and abides by them. James was initially annoyed by him, but saw the value of Fergus' ideas after he had an accident.

Abby (S&M #2, NWR #19)

Abby was one of the engines who helped Edward build Tidmouth Station. She is friendly, helpful, and kind, but is also very stubborn. She is good friends with Edward. When City of Wellsworth tried to destroy Edward, she came to Edward's rescue, and together they were able to stop him. Unfortunately, she was dragged off a cliff by City of Wellsworth. Abby was restored fifty-five years later, and works on the North Western Railway. She is based on an LMS 4F 0-6-0 class locomotive.

Molly (NWR #20)

Molly is a sensitive tender engine who works on the main line. When she first arrived, Rosie tried to befriend her and helped her out, but Molly was too shy and always ran away. Rosie grew frustrated and told Molly that if She didn't want to be her friend, she should have said so. Molly was cross, but when she saw Rosie struggling up the hill, she helped her up and the two have been firm friends ever since.

Charlie (NWR #21)

Charlie is a purple tank engine. On the mainland he gained a reputation as a very fun engine. When he arrived, all of the engines wanted to work with him except no-nonsense Duck, who (of course) was the engine he was assigned to work with. Charlie tried to make Duck more daring and adventurous. Duck tried, but was unable to do so. However, a special job made both of their viewpoints important.

Matthew (NWR #22)

Matthew is a BR standard class 4 tank engine brought in after the opening of the Kirk Ronan line. He is adventurous, quick-witted and very friendly, but he has a sharp tongue and finds it easy to hold a grudge. Matthew works as a shunter (which he does well due to his slightly perfectionist manner) at Tidmouth Yards, but occasionally works on the branch lines, especially the Kirk Ronan line.

Peter (NWR #23)

Peter is an SR "Schools" class locomotive. He's a quiet type, and isn't particularly fond of doing things that are dangerous or risky. However, he's got a big heart and will risk everything for a friend in need. Peter runs heavy frieght and passenger trains on the Kirk Ronan line, although he sometimes works the Main line if needed.

Billy (NWR #24)

Billy is a small tank engine who works on the Kirk Ronan line. He's very stubborn, and doesn't like anyone telling him what to do. He's also sensitive abouut his small size, and once thought he couldn't be useful because Gordon teased him about this. Fortunately, Billy proved him wrong by helping him out of a sticky situation. Billy is based on a generic 0-6-0T tank engine, with a design very similar to Charlie's.

Hank (NWR #25)

Hank is a large American engine who was brought in to help out on the main line. He is a very friendly and hard-working engine, but the other engines were intiially suspicious of him because of his odd appearance. This led Hank to request an overhaul from Victor, which made him look like an English engine. But after Hank rescued Donald, who had broken down on the main line, did he realize that appearances were unimportant, and was soon restored to his former appearance. Hank is based on a PRR K4 steam engine.

Stanley (NWR #26)

Stanley is a new tank engine. He's a little bit bigger and stronger than Thomas, and a lot more virtuous than him. Stanley first arrived to help out for the fifteenth anniversary celebration, and was well liked by the other engines except Thomas, who feared that Stanley would replace him. When Thomas saw Stanley in his berth at Tidmouth Sheds, he thought that his worries had been proven and ran away, eventualy running out of coal. Stanley found him, and helped him to the Sodor Steamworks. They then decided to be friends. Stanley is based on a generic 0-6-0T industrial tank locomotive design, and includes components distinctive to several manufacturers.

Hiro (NWR #51)

Hiro is an old Japanese engine. He arrived on Sodor in the 1930s to help out on the Sodor and Mainland Railway, and gave such exceptional performance that he was nicknamed "The Master of the Railway". But as the years went by, he fell into disrepair and was stored on an old siding when the line closed. He was found by Rosie and Peter almost fifty years later. They promised to help restore him, but no one was able to haul him to the steamworks. With much effort, he managed to get there under his own power, and was soon restored to his former glory. Hiro is based on a class D51 locomotive with some alterations.

Whiff

Whiff is one of the two garbage engines brought in to manage the new garbage dump constructed at Tdomouth. He's a friendly engine and a hard worker who's not afraid to get dirty in order to get the job done. He's also very naive, and can't understand why the other engines avoid him. He can be identified by his oddd, two-toned whistle and his large glasses. Whiff is based on the North Eastern Railway's Aerolite, and shares its number, 66.

Scruff

Scruff is a boxy tank engine who works with Whiff at the Tidmouth Garbage Dump. He's not a bad engine, but the other engines find him decidedly odd. This is understandable, as he revels in filth and hates being cleaned. But after a good washdown (which he hates), he's a respectable engine and a very hard worker. Scruff is based on a Sentinel Shunter.

Victor

Victor is the Hispanic resident locomotive at the Sodor Steamworks and in charge of all work there. He doesn't like dawdling, trouble making, or anything that slows down work (this is ironic because he works with Kevin). He is also annoyed by diesels. Despite this, he's funny and kind, and a good friend to the other engines. Victor is the only narrow-gauge NWR locomotive.

Bill and Ben

Bill and Ben are two troublesome twins. They used to work on the Other Railway. As a prank, the two snuck around and caused some water towers to be filled with bad water. This caused any engine who used it to have a bad case of boiler ache and be unable to work for at least a week. Donald and Douglas eventually caught them, and Sir Topham Hatt sent them to work at the quarry under Fergus's watchful eye.

Alex (LMS #2700)

Alex is a medium-sized tender engine. He is part of the National Collection, and went with the engines on their way to York. He teased Edward and Toby about their age, but they proved him wrong. Later, Alex came to Sodor when the National Railway Museum was destroyed by Diesel 10's bomb. He is a good-natured engine, but can be a little conceited at times. Alex is based on an LMS Hughes "Crab" locomotive.

Natalie (LMS #2500)

Natalie is a large tank engine in the National Collection. Her best friend is Duck, although they often argue about the superiority of their own railways (Duck preferring the GWR, Natalie favoring the LMS). It created a rift when they first met, but when Duck rescued Natalie after she ran out of coal, the two became friends. She came to Sodor after the National Railway Museum was destroyed. Natalie is based on an LMS 3-Cylindered Stanier 2-6-4T.

Neville (BR #33001)

Neville is a friendly steam engine who used to be in the National Collection. When Emily and Henry first met him, they were suspicious of his diesel-like appearance. This eventually led to Neville's derailment. Henry and Emily came to his rescue and the three became friends. Neville now works on the North Western Railway. He is based on a Q1 tender engine.

Tim (LMS #9395)

Tim is a friendly tender engine who is part of the National Collection. He was scheduled to pull a special, but James took his place in order to get the free luxuries involved beforehand. However, James wasn't strong enough to actually take the special, and Tim arrived soon afterward. He was cross, but forgave James soon afterwards. The two became friends, and James was allowed to act as a banker for the train. He now works on the North Western Railway. Tim is based on an LNWR G Class.

Spencer

Spencer is Gordon's cousin, and an A4. He came to The Great Railway Show. He and Gordon became enemies after an argument, and things only worsened when Gordon's tender disappeared the day before he had to take a special. Gordon accused Spencer of taking his tender, so Spencer gave Gordon his own tender. Later, the tender was found, and the two forgave each other. Spencer now works on the North Western Railway.

Eve (BR #92220)

Eve (short for Evening Star) is, as of 1980, the last steam engine ever built. Thomas met her at the National Railway Museum, and seeing her helped him to understand what had happened to steam engines. He later rescued her from a bomb scheduled to go off at a ceremony. Eve is very kind and helpful, but she is also very stubborn and determined. Thomas saved her from the blast, and she in turn hauled him over to the other engines. Eve now works on the North Western Railway. Eve is a 9F locomotive, and so sister to Murdoch.

Diesel Engines

Diesel

Diesel is a black 08 shunter. He's cruel, devious, and clever. The first time he arrived, he was certain that he would replace the steamies, but only had an accident and was sent away in disgrace. He has periodically returned and continues to cause trouble. Diesel is often clumsy and rarely does a good job. However, he does have a little bit of good in him, even if he prefers not to show it.

'Arry and Bert

'Arry and Bert are two diesels who work at the smelters yard on the Other Railway. Like Diesels, they are 08 shunters. They first appeared while trying to hunt down Oliver, who was escaping from scrap. Fortunately, they were stopped by a falling scrap pile before they could catch him. Since then, they've occasionally worked with the NWR engines, much to their chagrin.

Boco (NWR D1)

Boco is a metrovick co-bo engine who works on the main line. When he first arrived, the other engines didn't like him. He eventually won their respect, but not before after he had an accident because James wouldn't help him. Boco is kind, friendly, and very hard-working.

Daisy (NWR D2)

Daisy is a lazy class 101 diesel rail-car. When she first arrived, she refused to do any of her jobs, but when Emily broke down doing them for her, she helped him home. Sir Topham Hatt kept her, and Daisy is sure never to misbehave again! Daisy now works suburban passenger trains on the Ffarquhar line.

Salty (NWR #D3)

Salty is a class 07 diesel engine who came to Sodor as a dockside shunter. He loves to tell stories of the sea, and enjoys everything about the docks, especially the smell of fish. He helped teach Thomas to be more tolerant of jobs he didn't like. Salty is excellent at controlling trucks, and is possibly handles them better than any other engine on the island.

Mavis (NWR #D4)

Mavis is a class 04 diesel with sideplates and a cowcatcher. She works mainly at Ffarquhar quarry. She's impatient and stubborn, but likes to be useful as much as any other engine. Once, in a desperate attempt to leave the quarry, she hid all the brake vans so that she would have to fetch a new one from down the line. While she was away, however, Toby took a line of trucks, not knowing there was no brake van. Inevitably, an accident happened. Mavis helped clear up the mess, and confessed what she had done. Sir Topham Hatt was pleased with her work and Mavis is allowed to come down the tramway.

758 & 145

758 and 145 are two diesels who live on the other railway. They hate steamies and enjoy teasing them. Both stay at the sheds of Barrow-in-Furness, meaning that they often come in contact with the Fat Controller's engines. 758 is a class 27 diesel engine, and 145 is a class 09 diesel shunter.

Electric Engines

Tess (NWR #E1)

Tess is a friendly GG1 engine who runs a special electric branch line with overhead wires. Henry once had to work with her, and although he found her unusual, they slowly became friends. Later, when James broke down, Tess rescued him, but the engines thought she had made him crash. Henry stood up for her, and the other engines realized that Tess was a useful engine.

Narrow Gauge Engines

Skarloey & Rheneas (SR #s 1 & 2)

Skarloey and Rheneas are old engines who work in the hills. They are old, but are experienced, and they often give the other engines advice. Both have a lot of determination, and they will struggle on no matter what.

Sir Handel (SR #3)

Sir Handel is a stubborn engine who works on the Skarloey railway. He is quite friendly, but doesn't like to take trucks or even coaches that are not bogey coaches. Sir Handel has often used trickery to get out of his jobs, but he sees sense in the end.

Peter Sam (SR #4)

Peter Sam is a happy little engine. He does his work without fuss, but can be slightly naive and is often overeager.

Rusty (SR #5)

Rusty is a friendly diesel who does maintenance work on the Skarloey railway. He can be stubborn, but it's hard for him to bear a grudge for a long time. Rusty is friends with all of the other engines except Duncan.

Duncan (SR #6)

Duncan is a headstrong engine. He'll only do jobs he deems fit, and often feels that he's overworked. Duncan has a tendency to "rock n' roll", often leading to his derailment.

Freddie (SR #7)

Freddie is a brave old engine. He often takes risks, and has earned himself the nickname "Fearless Freddie". Freddie is kind, but he doesn't like to be reminded of his age.

Ivo Hugh (SR #7)

Ivo Hugh is an amiable little engine. However, he sometimes lets his pride run away with him. He and Freddie once argued about their matching numbers, but they eventually became friends.

Duke (SR #8)

Duke is a hard-working narrow gauge tender engine named after the Duke of Sodor. He helped to build the SR. Duke is very strict, often calling out "That would never suit his Grace!" Because of his age, the younger engines often call him "Granpuff".

Smudger (SR #9)

Smudger was one of the engines brought in to help build the SR. He rode roughly on the rails, often derailing, and ignored those who reprimanded him. At last, after a huge accident that damaged Smudger's wheels and pistons, the manager made him into a generator. After many years, Smudger was found, and because of a shortage of engines was overhauled. The engines didn't trust him, but after he helped Duke home when he broke down, they forgave him.

Mighty Mac (SR #10)

Mighty Mac is a double-headed Farlie locomotive, with one face being Mighty, the other Mac. Together they can get many hard jobs done, but only if they don't bicker. When they first arrived, they were avoided because of their unusual design, but they proved that they were very useful.

Logging Engines

Bash & Dash (SLE #1 & 2)

Bash and Dash are two troublesome twins. They're not too strong, but make up a large part of the workforce on the Logging Extension. They like to cause trouble. Once, the two derailed while carrying some important construction materials. They were sent to the sheds, but later returned to stop a runaway that was heading towards the new station. They are now really useful engines. Both are based on American logging locomotives. Bash's boiler, wheels, and lining are painted grey, his cab and dome are painted yellow. Dash's boiler, wheels, and lining are painted yellow, his cab and dome are painted grey.

Ferdinand (SLE #3)

Ferdinand is a large logging loco. He is very strong and powerful, but is a gentle giant. He can make special tweeting sounds with his whistles, which was essential to saving the new station. Ferdinand is the only engine who can really see the good in Bash and Dash, and is quite capable of keeping them in order. Ferdinand is based on a Climax C logging locomotive, and is painted teal with gray lining.

Movie Characters

Lady

Lady is a magical tank engine. She controls gold dust, which sustains Sodor. She was a mere story until Sodor was threatened and Thomas set out to find her. Lady and Thomas joined forces and Lady helped Thomas defeat Diesel 10.

Diesel 10

Diesel 10 is a angry diesel engine with an experimental claw that he calls Pinchy and uses as a weapon. Diesel 10 hates all steam engines and wants them destroyed. He was brought to Sodor on trial during Sir Topham Hatt's holiday. Diesel 10 attempted to take over Sodor and have all of the steamies scrapped, with the help of Dodge, Splatter, Diesel, and Stephen. Fortunately, the engines stood together and Thomas defeated him and reduced to a pile of scrap. He returned for revenge in the form of D0010, but the engines escaped his bomb, and he was blown off of the rails.

Dodge and Splatter

Dodge and Splatter (collectively known as Splodge) are two troublesome diesels. They worked for Diesel 10, doing his dirty work. They're both a few trucks short of a train and often misinterpret their instructions. Their current whereabouts are unknown.

Stephen

Stephen is an E4 tank engine. He came to Sodor at the same time as Diesel 10. He was friendly enough to the other engines, but Thomas was suspicious of him. It was eventually revealed that he was a spy. However, Stephen saw what he had done and repented. He sacrificed himself for Thomas, Percy, Rosie, and Lady by burning the bridge they had just crossed, even though this left him stranded with Diesel 10. In rage, he pushed Stephen into the bog.

Zachariah (S&M #3)

Zachariah was a mainline engine on the Sodor and Mainland Railway and played an important role in the construction of Tidmouth station. Zachariah is hard-working, dedicated, and serious. Despite this, he will always led a buffer and help out his friends. Zachariah was saved by a heritage railway after the closure of the S&M. He is based on the SR H15 class locomotive.

Sammy (S&M #4)

Sammy is a funny, cheeky tank engine. He is a bit of a practical joker, although this often gets him into trouble. The other engines like him, except when they're the prankee. Sammy also helped save Edward from destruction at the buffers of City of Wellsworth. He was rescued by a heritage railway when the S&M closed down. He is based on an LNER Q1 0-8-0T engine.

City of Wellsworth (WSK #1)

City of Wellsworth was an express engine who worked on the Sodor and Mainland's rival, the Wellsworth, Suddery, and Knapford Railway. He is mean, cruel, spiteful, and impatient. He once started a forest fire because of disrespect for the rules. He is Edward's nemesis, although he hates all the Sodor and Mainland Railway engines. In the end he fell off of cliff (dragging Abby with him) during a plot to destroy Edward, and was shipped off for scrap. City of Wellsworth is based on the GWR 3700, the class of City of Truro.
