From TrainSpottingWorld, for Rail fans everywhere

The Great Railway Show is the third secial of The Sodor Engines. It was released in 2016. This special is unique, as it was released as several seperate stories with one main story arc.

Plot

Introduction (Not So Old)

The engines of the North Western Railway are invited to a railway show at the National Railway Museum in York. As there is not too much traffic, Sir Topham Hatt decides to let Thomas, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, Toby, Duck, and Emily go. The engines are all very excited. To save fuel, Sir Topham Hatt has Duck and Percy loaded onto flatbeds. The journey goes well, and they meet Alex, who is also heading to the show. Alex is impressed by all of the engines except Toby and Edward, and he teases them, saying that they're too old to even make the journey. Later, Henry (who was pulling Duck and Percy) runs out of special coal and is unable to run. Toby and Edward take him and the flatbeds. When they arrive, Alex apoligizes for being rude.

GWR vs. LMS

At the show, Duck meets Natalie, a large black tank engine. The two get along until Duck starts talking about the GWR. Natalie scoffs at the GWR, proclaiming her loyalties for the LMS. This greatly annoys Duck, who is encouraged by a class 47 diesel to show that he's better. He tries to prove himself (and thus the GWR) superior to Natalie (and the LMS), but he fails miserably each time. Fianlly, Duck gives up. However, soon after he must rescue Natalie, who has run out of coal on the show tracks. The two become friends and decide that each of their railways is the best.

Mistaken Identity

A workman mistakes James for another engine and sends him off to get a new coat of paint and a polishing before a special that evening. James, eager for the luxuries, pretends that he is the other engine, and enjoys himself greatly. That night, however, James is not strong enough to take the special. The real engine, Tim, indignantly arrives soon after. James confesses, and Tim eventually forgives him. James is allowed to act as a banker at the back of the train.

Steamie or Diesel?

Henry and Emily are mocked by two diesels. Soon after, they meet Neville, a Q1 tender engine who looks like a diesel. Emily and Henry don't trust Neville, although he is very friendly and helpful. They purposely avoid Neville, which makes him more sad and confused. Emily tells Neville to take some empty coaches as a distraction. Neville is accidently diverted onto the worng line and derails. Emily and Henry come to his recue, and the three decide not to judge a book by its cover.

The Fastest Engine Contest

A contest is being held to see who is the fastest engine in the collection. Among the contestants are Mallard, Green Arrow, City of Truro, and Duchess of Hamilton. Percy is watching the contest when a workman tells him that he needs to bring the trophy to the other end of the race line. Percy is coupled up and leaves just as the race begins. The race is intense: Green Arrow is diverted into a siding, City of Truro runs out of water, and Duchess of Hamilton derails. Percy himself is nearly derailed by a passing diesel, but he makes it by safely. It finally comes down to Percy and Mallard. Percy is determined to get to the end on time, and Mallard overheats just before the finish line. It takes some time before Percy figures out that he won the race. Afterwards, all of the engines cheer for him and he is presented with a plaque with the words Fastest Engine in the National Collection on it.

The Missing Tender

Gordon is enjoying the railway show until he literally runs into his cousin Spencer, an A4. The two argue with each other and Gordon leaves, recalling an argument many years before. When Gordon wakes up, he discovers that his tender is missing. Without it, he cannot pull a special that night. Gordon accuses Specncer of stealing his tender in order to get to take his special. Spencer claims that he is innocent, but Gordon doesn't believe him. Spencer is angry, but realizes he wouldn't trust himself if he were Gordon. As a token of good faith, he gives Gordon his own tender to use for the special. After the special, Gordon's tender is found, and the two bcome friends again.

The Final Night

The last night of the show is approaching, and all of the engines have arrived to get ready. The North Western railway locomotives all tell Thomas about their adventures. Later, he meets two engines: D0010, a maroon class 47 diesel; and Evening Star (she goes by Eve), a 9F locomotive and the last steam engine ever built in England (at least in 1980). Thomas is picked to be at the final ceremony with Eve. He is almost ready when he is shunted into a frieght train and stowed in the goods yards. There he discovers his attacker is D0010, who reveals that he is Diesel 10 resmelted into a new form. He tells Thomas that he had been the engine that suggested that Duck and Natalie compete, that he had stolen Gordon's tender, he was the one who had mocked Henry adn Emily, and the he was the one who had tried to run Percy off the rails.. He also tells Thoams of a bomb scheduled to go off as the ceremony begins. Thomas fights his way past Diesel 10 and leaves him standed off the rails while he rushes to warn the others. Everyone makes it out of the bomb range just in time.

Epilouge (Homeward Bound)

The next day, most of the ngines are repaired, and the rebuilding of the National Railway Museum has begun. However, it will take a long time, and there is no room at the storage areas for Alex, Natalie, Tim, Neville, Spencer, and Eve. Sir Topham Hatt says that he will let them stay on his railway for as long as they need. All of the NW engines are given honorary places in the National Collection, and begin the journey home to Sodor.
