Edward is an old, blue tender engine.

History

Edward was built in 1896 for the Sodor and Mainland railway, based on a Furness Railway design. Although relatively small, he proved himself very useful in many instances.

One of these instances was the construction of Tidmouth Station in 1923. He discovered that a forest fire had started because of an engine named City of Wellsworth, who swore revenge. He tried to push Edward over a cliff, but Edward and his friends Abby, Zachariah, and Sammy were able to stop him.

Edward worked on the railway for many years, through its merger with the Wellsworth, Suddery, and Knapford line. Sadly, the Great Depression caused a huge decrease in traffic, and it could never get back up from this incredible blow. The railway closed in 1949.

Edward was then put into storage for many years until he was bought by the new North Western Railway in 1969. The old engine was put to work on the main line. During the construction of the line, Edward, with his experience on the Sodor and Mainland Railway (which the North Western line is based on), could find his way around the railway quickly and easily. He also put his experience to work, and mentored the younger engines, helping them adjust to their new home.

In 1976, Edward was kidnapped by the experimental engine Diesel 10, sustaining severe damage from the cruel diesel's abuse. While captive, Edward helped Diesel 10's spy Stephen see the error of his ways.

Edward currently runs freight and passenger trains on the main line, with his good friends Boco and Abby.

Personality

Edward is very kind and helpful. His long life has given great wisdom, and he often offers advice to the other engines. Edward can sometimes be insecure about his age, especially if the other engines tease him about it. Despite this, he can still do a lot of things, and he proved this to the other engines by pulling the express when they thought him too worn-out to be of any use.

Basis

Edward is based on a modified Furness Railway K2, also known as "Larger Seagull".
