Henry is a sickly green tender engine.

History

Henry was built for the LMS using plans stolen from the LNER. When he was tested in 1934, it was found that Henry was a poor steamer and was completely worthless to the railway. They had him put on local goods trains, and he lived this way for about thirty years, working for both the LMS and British Railways.

He was acquired by Sir Topham Hatt in 1968. Sir Topham Hatt was disgusted at Henry's poor construction and condition and sent him to Crewe for a rebuild into a Stanier "Black Five". After his return, he helped build the NWR. Henry runs heavy freight and passenger trains on the main line.

He occasionally pulls the express if Gordon can't do it. Once, however, this almost led him to ruin: when attempting to pull the express as well as his own train, his injector failed. His boiler nearly exploded, but fortunately he was diverted into a lake, which cooled him sufficiently.

In 1976, Henry and James discovered Diesel 10's plot to destroy Sodor while waiting in a scrap yard. They also saved Thomas and Duck from being poisoned by toxic coal. They both received recognition for this after the crisis was over.

In 1980, Henry and Emily met a Q1 tender engine named Neville. Although initially suspicious of him, they became friends with the odd-looking engine. Henry was later made part of the National Collection.

Personality

Henry can be stuck-up and conceited, but will lend a hand if necessary. He is often treated as lazy by the other engines when he is feeling poorly. Henry has a soft spot for nature and will sit for hours on end in the forest, listening to the silence. He once tried to stop lumberjacks from cutting down his favorite tree (with bad results).

Basis

Henry is based on a modified LNER A1 locomotive, but was later rebuilt as a "Black Five".
