Script
Narrator: One evening, Thomas was taking Annie and Clarabel to the coach yard, where they always stayed at night. He shunted them into their shed, next to Henrietta and Victoria. Thomas said goodbye.
Thomas: Good night. You were wonderful, as always. I don’t know what I’d do without you.
Narrator: The next day, Thomas was with the other engines at Tidmouth. Sir Topham Hatt had an important announcement.
Sir Topham Hatt: Thomas, you will be taking some children to the picnic today. First you must have a new coat of paint. Then you will go to Elsbridge to collect Annie and Clarabel. Percy, you must collect Annie and Clarabel and take then to Great Waterton.
Thomas and Percy: Yes Sir!
Narrator: Percy rushed off to collect Annie and Clarabel. They were pleased to see him. He was soon coupled up and he rushed away to Elsbridge. He puffed down the main line, racing as fast as his pistons could pump. As they approached a steep hill, Percy went faster than ever. When he reached the top, he gave a loud whistle of triumph. A nearby signalman was so surprised he jumped backward, knocking a switch. Just then, Percy and the two coaches rolled by, across the switch the signalman had just changed! Annie and Clarabel rolled onto the parallel track. They started to speed up and whizzed past Percy.
Percy: Couplings and cross tracks!
Annie: Oh my!
Clarabel: Oh dear!
Narrator: And the two coaches sped down the track. Ahead, Gordon was taking the express.
Gordon: Eat my cinders, slowpoke Henry! I can go faster than any train!
Narrator: Just then, Annie and Clarabel raced by, spraying Gordon with ballast.
Gordon: What was that?
Narrator: Annie and Clarabel kept on going. As they entered Knapford, the points diverted them into a siding, catapulting them into some flatbeds full of wheels. One wheel knocked a switch, and they were back on the main track. Another wheel hit Duck, denting his tank.
Duck: Ouch!
Narrator: Ahead lay the line to Elsbridge. The points had been set for Percy, and they headed off the main line. Meanwhile, Toby had been taking some trucks to an old mine nearby. Annie and Clarabel raced by him and into the dark mine. They raced deeper and deeper. Suddenly a turn appeared out of nowhere. Annie’s front wheels came off the line, and she struck the wall. The mine quivered ominously and dust went everywhere.
Annie: Help!
Clarabel: You know, being a coach is nice, what with being pulled around and all, but it also means you have no way to move on your own.
Narrator: Meanwhile, Percy was freaking out.
Percy: What do I do? What I do? Thomas’ll kill me when he finds out I lost Annie and Clarabel.
Narrator: Percy headed down the hill. There he met Gordon.
Percy: Gordon, have you seen Annie and Clarabel?
Gordon: Indeed I have. They just raced past me. I believe they were headed towards Knapford.
Narrator: Percy tracked Annie and Clarabel down the branch line and into the mine. He found the two coaches deep inside.
Annie: Get us out! It’s dark and damp! Curse you, Percy!
Narrator: Percy tried to tug them free, but he wasn’t strong enough to get them out on his own.
Percy: I know! I’ll go get the breakdown crane. Then I can get Annie and Clarabel back in no time.
Narrator: But when he arrived, Percy discovered that he had less time than he’d thought. Thomas was already there, looking for Annie and Clarabel. He saw Percy.
Thomas: Percy, where are Annie and Clarabel?
Percy: Well, they’re -um- wedged inside a mine.
Narrator: First, Thomas was surprised. Then his face went red with anger, green with fear, and blue with yellow polka-dots with disbelief. At last, he just stared at Percy.
Thomas:(Furious)You imbecile! You moron! How could you let this happen to them?
Narrator: Thomas continued to berate Percy all the way to the mine. They coupled up to Annie and Clarabel and started to pull. The mine started to rumble.
Thomas: Hurry! The mine’s going to collapse!
Narrator: They rushed out. Right behind them, the mine entrance shook and rocks started to fall. The timbers collapsed, and rock from the cliff face tumbled down, blocking the entrance.
Annie: Thank you Thomas!
Clarabel: Thank you Percy!
Percy: (Worried) I'm sorry Thomas.
Thomas: Don't be. It was an accident. I shouldn't have gotten so mad at you. Will you forgive me?
Percy: Of course.
Narrator: Later, Sir Topham Hatt inspected the mine.
Sir Topham Hatt: I think this was for the best. Now no engine, coach or car will ever enter the mine again. Percy, you acted well. Thomas still managed to get to the picnic on time.
Percy: Thank you, Sir.
