Fanfic: The Sodor Engines Specials: Sodor, Part Eight

From TrainSpottingWorld, for Rail fans everywhere

Plot

Thomas, Rosie, Percy, Toby, and Lady are saved by an unlikely hero.

Script

Narrator: Most of the diesels had left, leaving only Edward and Stephen.

Edward: Stephen?

Stephen: What?

Edward: Why?

Stephen: Why what?

Edward: Why did you go over to their side? What could they possibly have told you that would make you betray your own kind?

Stephen: They're my ticket to power, Edward. Once Sodor's theirs, I won't have to worry about scrap. I won't have to worry about anything!

Edward: You really believe that, Stephen?

Narrator: Stephen said nothing. Just then, Diesel rolled up.

Diesel: Come on, Stephen! The steamies have escaped. You don't need to worry about this old scrapheap. He won't cause any trouble.

Narrator: It was true. Stephen looked at the old engine. Edward had no fight left in him. His paint was nicked and scratched, his boiler was dented in many places, his bufferbeam was bent badly.

Stephen: (thinking) Could I really be an ally to engines that would do this?

Diesel: Well, Stephen? Are you coming?

Narrator: Stephen thought for a little bit longer before puffing away.

(Cut to a marsh)

Narrator: Meanwhile, Thomas, Rosie, Toby, and Percy, with Lady in tow, raced across Sodor, with the diesels hot in pursuit. Eventually, they found themselves on an old line that ran through a highly polluted swamp. The tracks creaked and groaned under their weight. Thomas looked down at the marsh; the black, oily water looked very deep. Thomas gulped. AS they approached an old goods yard near a bridge, Percy slowed to a halt.

Percy: I think I’ve run out of water.

Rosie: We'll never make it now!

Toby: Shush! What's that?

(The engines hear the horns of diesels in the distance)

Rosie: We have to go!

Thomas: Let's look around. Maybe there's an old water tower.

Narrator: Thoams chuffed off to one part of the yard. He looked around, but knew it was hopeless. He was doomed, the others were doomed, and Sodor was doomed. Rosie rolled up.

Rosie: Thomas, we have to keep looking.

Thomas: Rosie, there's no way we'll make it. We're doomed.

Rosie: Don't look at it that way! You'll find away. In all my years of work, from America, wartime France, and the Southern Railway, I've never met an engine quite like you. If you can't find a way, no one can.

Thomas: (sighs) I wish you were right.

(Rosie rolls forward)

Narrator: Just then, a shadowy form entered the yard.

Toby: Who's there?

(Stephen rolls forward)

Thomas: You!

Stephen: Thomas, I'm sorry. I'm sorry to all of you. Can you please forgive me?

Rosie: No.

Stephen: (sighs) I understand. I wouldn't forgive me either. But I want to help.

Toby: Help?

Stephen: Percy, you can have some of my coal.

(The coal is exchanged)

Stephen: Now go! I'll stop them!

Toby: It looks like we're going to have to trust him.

Narrator: Rosie, Toby, and Percy, with Lady in tow, hurried away. Thomas went with them for a while, but then returned.

Thomas: (muttering) I'd trust a ballast car more than I'd trust Stephen.

Narrator: Thomas positioned himself on the other side of an old bridge just outside the yard. he could see Stephen shunting old oil trucks onto the bridge. The trucks were leaky, and covered the rails and sleepers with oil. Then Stephen moved away to the very end of the bridge. The sound of the diesls grew louder and louder until Diesel 10 and his cronies burst into view.

Diesel 10: Stephen! Glad to see you could join us!

Stephen: I'm not joining you. Never again.

Diesel 10: (taken aback) What?

Stephen: I can't do this anymore. I can't let you harm innocent engines.

(Diesel 10 sees the oil cars)

Diesel 10: Don't even think about it, you stinkin' little-

(Stephen coldly reverses, slamming the trucks into each other. They break and ignite.)

Diesel 10: You thought about it! You did worse than think about it! You did it!

Stephen: It's the end of the line, Diesel 10.

Diesel 10: For you it is!

(Diesel 10 swings his claw at Stephen, knocking him off the bridge. Thomas gasps)

Narrator: Thomas watched, horrified, as Stephen tumbled into the swamp. There was a splash, and he vanished without a trace.

Diesel 10: The bridge may be down, but you're not safe yet, Puffballl!

Narrator: But Thomas wasn't looking at Diesel 10. He was still staring down at the swamp, where he had just watched perhaps the noblest act ever done on Sodor.

(A single tear rolls down Thomas's cheek)

Thomas: Yes, Stephen. I forgive you.
