Episode 47: 98462
Molly is showing a new steam engine around the line. When 98462 finds he is to share a shed with tank engines, he is disgusted and insults them. Soon, he is to take a goods train to the other railway, and decides to use go fast, but goes out of control, slips on the oily rails and crashes into the back of a suburban train.

Transcript
Part One
Narrator: There are two kinds of steam engines on the North Western Railway. There's tank engines and tender engines like Molly at Norramby branch line, Gordon on the main line, and Edward on his line. But Sir Topham Hatt finds diesels useful as well, because they can pull either coaches or trucks. One afternoon, Gordon, Spencer, and Molly were at Knapford Station. A new engine had arrived. He was of Holden build like Molly and Toby - a Great Eastern Railway B12, and was in British Railways express blue.
Spencer: Look, it's one of our own.
Gordon: How are you doing, mate? I'm Gordon, and this is Spencer and Molly.
98462: Very well, thank you. My number is 98462. I'm looking for a bit of a rest. Can you show me sheds?
Molly: Certainly.
Narrator: So Molly showed 98462 to the sheds. When he saw the tank engines, he stopped and glared at them.
98462: {growling rudely} Why on earth does your controller keep tank engines? Useless, slow, steam engines - UGH!!!
Narrator: He shuddered delicately.
98462: On our railway, tank engines are kept in the sidings, and not allowed on the mainline without permission.
Narrator: Molly eventually lost patience with 98462.
Molly: {angry} Stay outside then if you're so proud about it! I'm going to join my friends!
Thomas: I hope it's cold tonight and his fire is slow to start. Who'd care about an old stuck-up like 98462, anyway?
Percy: He's a bossy boiler!
Narrator: Things were no better for the tank engines. 98462 was full of self-importance, and boasted about how tank engines were useless, even if they had fourteen wheels, or their name was Stevenson. Even the Norramby engines lost patience.
Dennis: That blasted 98462 is constantly telling me how to shunt his trains! I know how to shunt my trains!
Neville: He'll never show respect to Southern engines!
Molly: He'd never have a shiny yellow coat like me!
Eagle: He'll never have manners!
Narrator: But Zack the Holmes J83 tank engine overheard the engines' argument.
Zack: Never fear - Zack is here! I know how to sort that 98462 out!
Narrator: So the next morning, Zack was preparing 98462's goods train. It consisted of the oldest, rudest trucks. Zack was careful not to go to fast. 98462 was coupled to the train, and Zack puffed in with Gordon's express.
Zack: Hello. You must be the new engine. I'm Zack.
98462: Useless little engine!
Zack: Well, excuse me for being polite! Those trucks are very old and you must be careful.
98462: Why?
Zack: They get cranky after 50 miles an hour.
98462: Rubbish! I don't need help from a useless little blue puffball!
Narrator: Zack was furious! He left to shunt in the yards. Soon, 98462's train was ready to go. The guard blew his whistle, and they set off. 98462 puffed along at 45 miles per hour. He came to Gordon's hill, and thought about what Zack had said.
98462: Silly little engine! I'll go over this hill fast!
Narrator: 98462 increased his speed at 60 miles an hour as he climbed the hill.
98462's driver: Steady, boy! The trucks may revolt!
98462: I don't care!
Narrator: 98462 reached the top, and then there was trouble. The trucks pushed him down Gordon's hill!
98462: Great blocks of buffers! I can't stop!
Narrator: ...he wailed. 98462 was pushed on and on. Through a junction where Donald was waiting.
Donald: Great Scott! What was that?!
Narrator: But still, 98462 went on. Up ahead, the points led to a siding, and there was a suburban train waiting to let 98462 pass. 98462 skidded on his brakes, but it was too late!
98462: HELP!!!
{Crash! 98462, the trucks, the suburban train, and it's engine are in a mess.}
Narrator: Because 98462 had gone too fast, he had ended up in a big mess.
98462: {moans} Owwww....
Narrator: 98462 was embarrassed when Thomas, Percy, Zack, and Molly arrived, with Rocky the crane, and Sir Topham Hatt. Sir Topham Hatt was very cross.
Sir Topham Hatt: 98462! You have caused confusion and delay! I don't know why you would crash into a suburban train, and your trucks are now in pieces.
Zack: He did ignore my advice though.
Sir Topham Hatt: And your attitude to tank engines! When you are repaired, you're not coming back to Sodor!
98462: {sheepishly} Yes, sir... Sorry, sir...
Narrator: Soon, the mess was cleared, and Zack and Molly took 98462 to the Sodor Steamworks. 98462 was silent for the whole journey. At the Sodor Steamworks, 98462 felt more miserable than ever.
Victor: Come on, 98462, it doesn't get the job done faster if you don't smile. Come on, smile - I know you can do it!
Narrator: 98462 couldn't. Suddenly, there was a crash. Kevin had goofed again. 98462 had closed his eyes because of the noise.
Victor: Kevin! Slowly, slowly - gently, gently.
Kevin: Sorry, boss. Just a slip off my-
Victor: Hook. I know.
Sing-a-Along Segment
{Cut to Thomas and Emily at Tidmouth Sheds.}
Thomas: Now comes the part of the show which I enjoy best of all: the sing-along! In which you folks at home join in and sing the lyrics of the next song right along with us! You ready, lads? And a-one, and a-two, and a-
Emily: Hold on a minute, Thomas!
Thomas: What's the problem, Emily?
Emily: You can't expect the people at home to just join in cold like that!
Thomas: I can't?
Emily: Of course not! First you got to put them in the correct mood with the proper props!
Thomas: Well, what sort of decorations would you suggest for this next song? - it's a really wild rhythm!
Emily: Wild, you say? {quickly assembles an amazon forest and dresses as a wild hunter} There! How's that?
Thomas: This is the most preposterous thing I've ever seen, Emily! Do you actually think that these props will make anyone believe they're really in-
{Emily fires her gun by mistake and an elephant charges by.}
Thomas: Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle!
Emily: See, it's even got you believing it! {laughs}
Thomas: Sing, please.

Thomas: That wasn't bad for a warm up, but in this next number, I expect to hear each and every one of you singing at the top of his lungs! Are you ready now?
Emily: Thomas, oh, Thomas!
Thomas: Now what?
Emily: You forgot about the props, remember?
Thomas: Oh not that nonsense about redecorating the sheds for each song.
Emily: Right you are. It helps put the audience in the proper mood.
Thomas: Oh, all right. Well, this next number is an absolute knockout! Now, what have you got for that?
Emily: Just you watch! {quickly assembles a wrestling ring with a kid wrestler licking a lollipop, Emily dressed as a wrestler}
Thomas: What in blinking blue blazes is that?!
Emily: You said the next song was a knockout! {bell rings}
{Emily is knocked out by the kid, who punches her in the eye, giving her a black eye.}
Thomas: Of course! Now I get it - a knockout!
Emily: Could we change that to a lull-a-bye? {laughs}
Thomas: Oh, sing, children.

Part Two
Narrator: The weather became very cold. It was so cold that snow couldn't fall from the grey sky. One day, Thomas was at Knapford to pick up passengers with Annie, Brittany, and Clarabel. Thomas' fireman re-filled his tank with icy water.
Thomas' driver: We'll give you a good topping off while we can. There's no telling where we might get some more.
Narrator: While Thomas' tank was being re-filled, the fireman was called away and only returned when Thomas' tank was almost overflowing. The stand-pipe was quickly turned off and Thomas set off. Thomas was making good time when he mysteriously felt thirsty.
Thomas: I need a drink, please!
Narrator: The driver turned his injector, but nothing happened. The fireman tried. Still, nothing happened.
Thomas: {groaning} I got such a pain!
Thomas' driver: Your injector's failed. Blockage in the pipe, most likely. We'll have to stop and do with your fire. Can't go on without water.
Thomas: Don't set the sleepers on fire! Henry would never let me forget it!
Thomas' fireman: {laughs} We'll be all right if we just damp down your fire. There's no need to throw the fire out.
Narrator: They stopped near a signal box, and Thomas' fireman asked the signalman to telephone for help. Only one engine was available to help Thomas. Yes, it was 98462. When Thomas heard him coming, he was cross.
Thomas: Me, rescued by 98462? I'd rather freeze out here!
Narrator: But there was nothing he could do. 98462 buffered up behind and pushed with all his might. The train groaned forward, and soon they were running smoothly. They reached Ffarqhuar just in time. Sir Topham Hatt was waiting.
Sir Topham Hatt: Well done, 98462. Maybe you don't need to be sent away after all. You have proved to me you are a Really Useful Engine.
Narrator: Later, that night, 98462 apologized to Thomas and the other tank engines.
98462: {sheepishly} I'm sorry I made fun of you all. Tank engines are just as good as tender engines, I suppose.
Thomas: And we're sorry we said mean things to you. It doesn't matter whether we're a steamie or a diesel, because we can all be Really Useful.
Narrator: 98462 was now allowed to stay on Sodor, and was now called "Gregory", because of his previous arrogance. The name struck, and he likes it.
Gregory: It's nicer than just a number - having a name means that you "really belong".
