- January 5 – The last train on the Swansea and Mumbles Railway in Wales leaves Swansea for Mumbles at 11:52 AM.

- February 5 – The Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad in Maine discontinues railway post office service with a final run using B&ML car number 73.[1]

- March 20 – Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad's Pioneer Zephyr trainset makes its final revenue run from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Kansas City, Missouri, after which it was operated to Chicago where it was donated to the Museum of Science and Industry.
