From TrainSpottingWorld, for Rail fans everywhere

DP67, welcome to Train Spotting World

If this is the first time you've used a wiki you may have a few questions. Most of the answers are obvious. To learn to edit, why not just dive in? At the foot of the editing window there is a help link. This opens in a new window and gives you a good overview of wiki syntax and stuff.

If you would like some introductory help, look at being adopted by an experienced user

There are very few rules here. The best summary is:

  • Respect other people's Copyright
  • Behave to others as you would like them to behave to you
  • Do no harm

This is not an encyclopaedia. Pages here do not need to comply with encyclopaedic notions or citations or neutrality. Just dive in and start.

It's always worth having a look at Station announcements every so often, too.

One of the first things you might want to do is to place {{talktome}} at the top of your talk page (this page) above this welcome message. Taking heed of what it says will make it much easier for you to follow discussions on talk pages.

And while you browse the site, and especially when you've created something truly worthwhile, why not Digg and also tag on del.icio.us – the tools are in the left hand menu. The more Diggs (etc) we have the better, because Diggs and del.icio.us links add to our findability. The best way to find out about them is to click on the tool. Each is different and each gives you the chance to "rate" any article here. Or anywhere else come to that!

Best yet you have a Spotting World Blog if you want it. Have a look at your User page. There is a link to let you create your blog. This is part of what Spotting World does for you. Or just go to blogs.spottingworld.com. You can use your blog for any lawful purpose. It's yours to do with as you like. Anyone can read your blog once you create it, but only you can write to it.

There is also a live chat room - see the left hand menu

Is Fan Fiction your thing? Check out our Fan Fiction area for further information.

If you need help with anything, try the FAQs or the Help pages, or pop over to the Station Cafe, and ask there.

And don't forget to tell your friends about us!

Hello!

Just wondered what your main interests are in trains/railways etc, and what you might like to help with most. Thanks, Bluegoblin7 18:33, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
I dunno too much about UK rail (Even though I was born a Yorkie boy, I've not been to England in over 30 years. :( ) but I'll try to help out any way I can with North American rail. I'm mostly a Diesel-electric fan and most of my knowledge in that department is with EMD and GE. I've been pretty involved in the Wikipedia train project over the past few months and happened upon this site looking to satisfy a cite demand someone spammed an article with (Hate those things!). Also just noticed your plug on the UK trains project there. I'd seriously watch your plugs on Wikipedia tho.. As much politics that goes on over there you might wind up getting yourself banned. (Politics is one of Wikipedia's downfalls!) I'm not much of a writer, I try, but I am mostly a behind the scenes type adding bits and pieces and fixing typos, formatting errors, etc. here and there. I see you've got Slambo here, he's an excellent writer so you're off to a good start. I'm still kinda learning the behind the scenes stuff and wiki markup, as you may have seen over there I'm working quite a bit on a few templates and polishing up the diesel loco articles. Cheers! --DP67 (talk/contribs) 18:58, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
Ok will try not to do too much more. And if i do get banned, im not too bothered - it's much nicer over here polotics wise. If you're interested in anything, please just sign up to it, or let me know!
Bluegoblin7 19:02, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

"it's much nicer over here polotics wise." That's good to hear! I can relate to the not bothered about being banned. I'll keep poking around and drop in a hand whenever I can. Take care,

--DP67 (talk/contribs) 19:32, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
Yes the only things that were worried about are legal issues. We won't even delete fictional info as long as it's within the FanFic area! Let me know if you ever need to know more. Take care too. Bluegoblin7 19:34, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
A welcome from me too. I do agree that WP is too bureaucratic and turning increasingly cult like. I hope you enjoy it here. Were still in the process of setting up alot of our informal processes and community. Thanks. Tbo 157 19:41, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
I have noticed you joined the Workforce:US Railways. You may be interested to have a look at Trains:Workforces where there is a list of current and proposed projects. You may add to the list if you wish. Thanks. Tbo 157 21:33, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Cats

Hi. I would normally respond on my own page, but will make an exception to ensure you see this.

TSW was started with a batch of 1500-2000 assorted ex-Wikipedia pages, templates and images. As part of this import process, all the pages included their category membership, but none of the categories were themselves imported.

Tim and I agreed early on that it made a huge amount of sense to simply re-use the same category structure as at WP. The cat names are likely to be the most appropriate, and the structure is already there, if not actually existing as concrete category pages.

This should make life much easier for you. As you copy pages from WP you will find that many cats already exist, and those that don't, once created, are likely to be part-populated already.

The only exceptions to these are:

  • Non-railway-related categories, which can usually be deleted from the page
  • 'Transport in XXX', which should be replaced by 'Rail transport in XXX' or 'Rail (something) in XXX'
  • 'Wikipedia' namespace categories, which are usually replaced by a 'TSW' equivalent
  • some of the more obscure template (eg) pages, where the cat is unlikely to be helpful.

Except for the obviously non-railway cats, it is probably best not to delete any other red-linked cats, as someone may come along later and create them.

If you add new cats, please check for what is already there and re-use where possible. If you create missing (or new) categories, please add them into the existing category tree -- this may require the creation of several layers of cats if there are many missing! (NB - you don't have to recreate every twig of a new cat branch, provided the branch is attached to the tree!)

We ought to add this as a FAQ really!

Hope that helps, and apologies for 'jumping in' without warning -- I only had a couple of minutes before setting off for work.

EdJogg 10:33, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Got it! No problem on jumping right in, in my haste I wasn't checking as I should. But, while we're on that subject can you delete Image:GE monogram logo.gif I found the one from the actual GE Transportation Systems article after the fact and it's actually better suited for List of GE locomotives. Ta!

Yes check.svg have done! Bluegoblin7 11:37, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Trains:Adopt-a-User

Hi. Sorry to keep bothering you. Ive noticed hat you changed {{Trains:Adopt-a-User/box-header}} to simply {{/box-header}}. I just thought that its worth noting that the full page title is necessary on this wiki for portal style layouts. I will try and fix this soon. Thanks. Tbo 157 17:13, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

OK, no problem.. --DP67 (talk/contribs) 17:35, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

RE:TWP

It's in your sandbox. Thanks, BG7 14:56, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Allowing anonymous edits...

Hi DP67,

We just wondered what your input was on the above topic. The only place we seem to succeed here is on the Thomas articles. Please contribute to the discussion on User talk:Bluegoblin7 on my talk page, with your thoughts, and then whether you support or oppose the gesture.

THanks,

BG7 18:11, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Re:CSD

Hi. Bluegoblin 7 isn't on at the moment so I hope you don't mind if I answer for him. There currently isn't a CSD so if you tell me or any other admin what you want deleted, Ill delete it for you. Secondly, images from Wikipedia should be uploaded using the correct lisence and {{From Wikipedia}} should be used.Tbo 157 13:33, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Ive deleted EDT for you. Thanks Tbo 157 13:39, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

OK, thats fine.. I see you got it already, I got dyslexic and reversed letters. Perhaps I should make a CSD template for people like me huh? "This article is a candidate for speedy deletion because the editor has Dyslexia" hehe Oh well.. Thanks!

--DP67 (talk/contribs) 13:44, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
If you could make a temp and the associated pages it would be great! For now, just ask me, Tim, Tbo, EdJogg or Slambo as were the admins, but when the wiki grows it willhelp! Thanks, --BG7 18:18, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Temps...

Hi DP,

A temp that i'd like you to make - if possible. I've just started doing some articles on Model Railways (or Railroads in the US :-D!), and I was wondering if you could do a temp saying 'This article is about a Model Railroad layout' or similar, with a UK parameter. If possible!

Thanks, --BG7 20:13, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Are you looking for article header or a talk page header? I could possibly make a few infoboxes for you as well if you wish.
--DP67 (talk/contribs) 07:49, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Here's something simple I threw together, changes can easily be made.

{{UKmodelrr}} Also; {{USmodelrr}}

I jusr realized I put RR not RW in the tamplate name.. LOL That can be fixed.

--DP67 (talk/contribs) 09:28, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Hi DP the temp is great - i'll move the UK one when i get round to it! If you could do an info box it would be great - scale, era, location etc, plus perhaps Rolling Stock Manufactureres? BG7 13:42, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

Yes check.svg Done Moved to {{UKmodelrw}} (Redirect in place from old)

--DP67 (talk/contribs) 15:24, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

I'll start working on the infobox straight away. I'll use Infobox Locomotive as a platform for model locos and work from there. For Routes, stations, rolling stock etc. I'll so the same. I'm not to knowledgeable when it comes to popular model manufactures, perhaps you could provide me with a list or a URL to point me in the right direction. I'm planning on building an N Scale soon, not sure when. but soon.. lol

Vandalism Barnstar

TSW-Barnstar.png The Missing Wheel
For you DP67, for reverting that batch of vandalism on Christmas Day. I got one lot in the morning, and blocked the user, but you rvd the 2nd. Well Done, and let's just pray we get an Anti-Vandal bot soon... BG7 11:29, 26 December 2007 (UTC) (P.S. This Barnstar will change Title and Picture when I get around to putting the Anti-Vandal one online!)

Adminship...

Hello DP67,

Following your useful edits and reverting vandals, I would like to nominate you for adminship. What do you think?

Ket me know!

BG7 11:31, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Maybe as long as WP:BITE is not in effect some people like yesterday's vandal deserve their arse chewed off! LOL I'm very stern when it comes to blatant vandalism like yesterdays incident, yet forgiving on honest intentions.

--DP67 (talk/contribs) 15:02, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
Heck I blocked it indefinitely. That works for me :) Tim Trent Talk to me 16:14, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
I think I'm gonna like it here. I hate WP's please stop or I'll tell your mum attitude and allowance of repeated vandals to come back and do it again. Then they ban a person who breaks the 3RR rule for trying to do what's right.
--DP67 (talk/contribs) 16:56, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Yes check.svg Done Ok DP. I've nommed you here, and you just need to accept it and then let people know that youve been nommed! BG7 11:06, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Congratulations, though it was never in doubt. Now who on earth will be archiving the request? I nominate you! ROFLMAO. Tim Trent Talk to me 21:27, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Question

Hi. Do you intend to significantly change the articles you've imported from Wikipedia? We, as a community, want to create a unique website for all rail fans and not a copy of WP. Statistics for this site show that there are only a countable number of unique to TSW articles. Most of the unique articles are the Thomas articles which are the most viewed on this site. Lets try and make all our articles unique and get all our pages viewed. Thanks very much. Class91 18:52, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Yes, if you are referring to the EMD article I just posted it was posted by mistake. I'm in the process of rewriting it and meant to hit preview, but hit save instead.. I'll have something up within the next few days to replace it.
--DP67 (talk/contribs) 20:54, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
Thats good to hear. Thanks. Class91 20:59, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
