Workforce:US railways/Bots

From TrainSpottingWorld, for Rail fans everywhere

This page will be used to build the specifications for bots to run over the content within the scope of Workforce:US railways. To propose a new bot action, simply start a new subsection under the Proposals section below and tell us about your idea (and add your signature via ~~~~ after your proposal and comments). When bots are written and tested, a description of their actions is moved into the Current bots section.

Proposals

This bot would add {{USR}} to the talk pages of articles in the categories associated with this workforce. It would travel downward through the subcategories recursively, adding the banner to talk pages that do not yet have the banner. Since CN and CP are primarily Canadian railroads with some (admittedly substantial) operations in the US, we need a way to tell the bot not to iterate through specific categories, or we need to build a list of acceptable categories that it can and should iterate through.

Optionally, this bot could update an as yet created "Recently added" section of Portal:US Railways to list a random sampling of ten articles that it adds the banner to. Slambo (Speak) 18:49, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Things you can do updater

This bot would randomly select five red links from the list of pages to write and would randomly select five articles from Category:United States rail stubs and then update the "Things you can do" section of Portal:US Railways. When the other subsections of this box are defined, the bot could be updated to randomly select five articles that are appropriate for those subsections. This bot should be run on at least a weekly basis to keep the content in the box fresh. Slambo (Speak) 18:49, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Related changes list builder

This bot would find all of the articles tagged with {{USR}} and put links to them all on one page (perhaps at Workforce:US railways/Articles) so interested editors can click on the "Related changes" link in the left navigation bar to find out all of the recent activity in articles within this workforce's scope.

Optionally, this bot could also update the "Recently added" section of the portal as described in the Banner adder bot above. Slambo (Speak) 18:49, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Bot Host

Well, I'm not having too much luck at installing a localized proving grounds for my Wiki work so might as well put my Linux box to some sort of use. I've run IRC bots on it before so shouldn't have ant trouble running wikibots. If a host is needed I'll run them here. My machines run 24/7 365 (Or as close to it as possible).
