Interesting - TJ format and other issues

I think a </center> (or two) may be missing becaise everything afterwards is centred after transclusion. I suspect it also has a __NOEDITSECTION__ in it because sections of user talk pages now can't be edited :)

You also have a rod for your own back if ytou transclude the current issue, because it will change every time you overwrite it with the next current issue.

It's pretty close, though. These are just niggles :)

I like it. It's just the minor extra details that could be awkward

Tim Trent Talk to me 11:42, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Yes i'm not quite sure about how to fix the center and no edit problem. Tbo set it up - i just edit it! Darn! Why did he leave? I reckon someone can fix it though...
I've just fixed one transclusion problem - it was using temps, so when i change the temp for issue 2, issue 1 changes also - but ive solved that problem. To fix your problem, change "current issue" to "Issue 1". Thanks, BG7 11:45, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
You could always try using 'subst', as that would de-link your newsletter from its source page. Not sure what would happen with sub-templates though.
Just a thought...as your circulation list increases, aren't you running the risk of occupying large amounts of disk space with duplicate copies? Wouldn't it be better to post a notification on your subscribers' talk pages, and let them follow a link to the newsletter? (I say this as someone who has not 'subscribed' because I don't want a complete newsletter dumped on my talk page every week!)
EdJogg 13:15, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Will look into substing...
As for delivery, one thing I am looking at is a collapsible version, or perhaps as you say just a link. If you subscribe and just want a link, then just say link only next to your name.
Oh and at some stage the whole thing needs to go to SpottingWorld, as it's for all the wikis...
BG7 14:57, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
I don't mind transclusion (no subst). As thelist increases you coudl even enjoy writing a bot to place the transcluded link onto subscribers' pages. The center and noeditsection are a bit of a pain, though. A solution is to fully proptect the newsletter and rm noeditsection. and then just debug where to close the center tags. Tim Trent Talk to me 16:24, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Ok I will protect it. It's only me who does the main editing. Others only contribute ideas, for me to choose. Problems comes when we get another main editor (to replace Tbo) and there not a sysop. We'll cross that path when we get there...
Will have a look at the center issue.

It needs a little more of a hard stare. It centres everything below it in the page again. It also cenbtres the skin!

I haven't checked, but try to edit a section below it. Do you get a blank edit pane?

It's so close....

Tim Trent Talk to me 15:34, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

yes you did. I've solved that problem, but im still working on the skin issue. BG7 23:21, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Transport Journal

BG7, how can I get a copy of "The Transport Journal" in my Talk Page? --DalekX 22:53, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Help!

{{helpme}} Hi guys,

i'm trying to use DP's infobox model loco, on this page, but as you can see it's copying in the docu and its missing some params.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

BG7 14:01, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Hey, I'll get working on that model railroad box for you. I was fooling around with a logo maker.. Check this out.. Image:BlueGoblin7.png.. Sorry, I couldn't resist. LOL I'll fix the loco infobox too.. I've been out all day so haven't had a chance to have a look.

--DP67 (talk/contribs) 01:42, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
LOL!!! Its on ma userpage...!
Cheers for the boxes!

Layout Template

I started woorking on a layout template.. here and applied a sample to your Kingsford railway here. Is there any other fucntions you think you'd need? Not all are expressed in the example there are a few more hidden in code.

--DP67 (talk/contribs) 16:56, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
Hmm... Yes, I think that's enough for now. Can you update the docu to reflect these? Thanks a lot for doing it! PS... look at Kingsford Station - like the totem? I can do any BR region with any name (yes, i know you US but so what?!?!).BG7 17:07, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Navigation sidebar

I see you have updated the navigation sidebar. Probably a good move.

Could you add suitable 'tooltips' for the two new entries?

EdJogg 15:44, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Erm yes... bt how? BG7 15:46, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
You have to edit MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Monobook.js. Do be careful in these pages as they contain alot of the javascript coding required for the site. Class91 18:02, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
I've found the section in Common.js, but i darent touch it? Could you possibly add it in my sandbox, and i'll move it across?
BG7 18:06, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

BBC News is copyright content!

Hi again. It's good that you are keeping an eye out for these news stories, but I'm afraid you'll need to do a bit more work than this. There is no problem about taking the entire BBC News story and reporting it here, but you'll need to substantially re-write it. The two articles you copied in (today) contain exact copies of the BBC News text, which is their copyright, and hence not permitted here. Hence these pages should be eligible for instant deletion.

Could you please either re-write or delete the articles 'ASAP'? There's no problem about keeping direct quotes verbatim, but the other text will need to be reworded/rearranged sufficiently to show that it is not a straight copy.

Incidentally, a few more suggestions:

  1. Provide a link to the exact news story, rather than just the basic BBC News site
  2. Include the date, and location?, in the article name (see WP for style): it avoids the problem of naming articles covering different instances of similar events, and simplifies article identification.
  3. Add a map showing the location of the incident (this can be inside the appropriate 'noinclude' tags)

Cheers EdJogg 22:55, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

TJ3 - please look at my talk page

Something went wrong, maybe div-wise? Tim Trent Talk to me 22:19, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Yes check.svg Done I know exactly what the problem is, and am just about to fix it now. I made the same mistake on Dalek X's page, but i obviously caught it there instead! BG7 11:10, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

T.J.

Hey, Bluegoblin. I was wondering, when should we start work on the 4th issue of the Transport Journal? I've got one or two announcements in mind, seeing as that's really all I've got to do. Thanks! --DalekX 04:54, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Dalek, glad you asked!
I've actually already done most of it - look here, but feel free to add more! Also, the stuff on the submission page needs either archiving or moving into chosen for next issue - it's all in there!
PS - di you create an account at SpottingWorld?
BG7 10:27, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Just did it a few minutes ago, mate. Time for me to add my few cents, and contribute to the Journal. --DalekX 19:02, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks a lot Dalek, and good luck! I'll help with the next issue aswell, and buy then you should be sorted. BG7 19:04, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Half a mo'. I've just had a look at the Spotting World page for the journal. I don't know where to put my announcements for the new issue. Could you direct me to the correct page, please? Thanks. --DalekX 19:08, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Hi Dalek,
The next issue is sworld:Project:The Transport Journal/Issue 4. There are several sections - announcements, discussions, community and transport stuff. Can you find it?
BG7 19:13, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Indeed I can, and did. If you look at the page, you will see that I have made a few edits to it. Hope you like them! --DalekX 19:28, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Yep that's great! You'll get the hang of how to do it over the next few issues, but until then, ill still be around to help... BG7 19:31, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, man! BTW, I heard that you have the power to "adopt-a-user". Could you adopt me? Thanks again! --DalekX 19:34, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Yeh sure no problems! I reckon i need to start brushing up on my Thomas Knowledge though - i've now adopted 2 TtTE editors... Which is no bad thing!
You'll see a userbox appear on your user page in the next few minutes... BG7 19:37, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Bluegoblin, I was just wondering, are you still passing out the Journal to everyone, or do we need to go to the Main Journal Page to see the new Journal? Thanks!
Oh, and Happy Birthday!!! Hope it's a good one! --DalekX 22:24, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

(reset indent) Hi Dalek, Yes, it is still delivered, however i've been rather busy recently. When you fully take over the TJ this will become part of your job - is that ok? BG7 12:58, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Hey, Bleugoblin
I delivered the 5th issue to those who signed up for it. Hope I did a good job. Oh, and Happy Birthday!!!!! --DalekX 17:33, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Well done SCRuffey. Do you understand why we made a fuss though? Your edits are still top quality, and we still wnat you to contrivute to Trains!

GG1

I saw your upload of Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 on recentchanges. The thing is, we've already got the text at PRR GG1 (PRR is the common abbreviation for Pennsylvania Railroad; it was the company's primary AAR reporting mark), so the new article is a duplicate. I was tempted to hit delete, but thought you might want to check through for missing content between the two versions first. Slambo (Speak) 18:41, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Suggest that the surviving article exists at the long name and that the short name becomes a redirect. It looks to me as if WP is the source of the new article, but once removed, with edits. So attribution under GFDL is necessary whichever survives even if the new source is like the Marie Celeste. Tim Trent Talk to me 18:51, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
Hi guys,
Like I said in the edit summary, it might be useful I did search for it, but nothing popped up, so please feel free to do what you want with the page!
Oh and ps, if youre interested, i've set up http://trams.wikia.com, as a site for worldwide trams. Don't worry, i'll still ad Tram stuff here, and it can always become TramSpottingWorld in the future!
BG7 19:54, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Happy Birthday?

I guess "Happy Birthday" is appropriate, after all, you've been dropping subtle hints for the past week...

(BTW - mine was on Monday, although '15' happened a while ago now...)

On a rather more serious point, is it really a good idea to show your birthdate here? There are several reasons why I ask. It is used as one of the basic security identifiers for on-line (and off-line) accounts, so needs to be treated with almost as much care as a PIN or account number. There is also the matter of avoiding, shall we say, 'unwanted attention'. Wikipedia has a policy of removing anything which can identify the age of a 'minor', to prevent undesirable persons from stalking, grooming, etc. I think you get the gist...

Having stated that, it is useful for us 'older' editors to know the age of contributors so that we can tailor our responses to problems according to the user's age and life experience. And it should not be a problem to identify your birth day, if the year (and your age) is not revealed.

This is a tricky area, and I think needs discussion, especially among 'older editors', to work out an appropriate course of action (ie 'Policy', there, there's that word again!)

EdJogg 13:22, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Hmmm... It is a tricky one. I can remove the template if that's what anyone wants? I've been using at WP, and i've seen younger people (8!) using it aswell. ALthough,of course, the other thing with the net is never trust anything you read/see... Perhaps it is possible to change the temp to day/month, leaving out year?
Thanks,
BG7 13:28, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
I think it is a matter for personal choice. My field is Data Privacy - it's what I do professionally. I've added a caveat to the template itself, and to the category that is intended to hold similar templates.
Since we can't prevent folk from saying "this is my birthday" we need to look at it as a similar, fun item.
Tim Trent Talk to me 13:32, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Ok, no problems... BG7 13:46, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit conflict]I'm not wanting to spoil anyone's fun. I vaguely remember a number of discussions concerning removal of categories for 'Wikipedians by age', and I was sure there was some policy about personal information like this, but I couldn't find anything relevant. This is annoying, as the important factors were clearly defined -- but I guess we can ask a question at WP if we need to.
Am I being too cautious here? I don't know. But the caveat will only be seen by people looking at the template/category page, and not by anyone who simply opens another's talk page and copies the ASCII. (Isn't that the usual way of getting user boxes?) And it commends mature judgment, so how does that work for our youngest editors (some much younger than BG), when it is these editors that potentially need the most protection?
If the template only identifies day/month, many of the potential problems are avoided, or at least, greatly reduced. However, I do acknowledge that it is down to each user to decide what to include.
EdJogg 14:14, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Hmmm... Well, if anyone does add it, we can warn them. I'm about to (slightly) change my deployment of it aswell.
Can anyone remove year from the template? I'm quite happy with that!
BG7 14:20, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
If a parent allows their minor child online unsupervised, that parent makes a judgment about the maturity of that minor child. I do not believe that it is in any way our responsibility morally or legally to take over the parent's duty of care to their child. I feel this holds true whether visiting chatrooms with the ever publicised and overemphasised alleged risks of predators, or whether visiting sites such as ours which are (presumably) safe.
The risk to a minor of ID theft is minimal. What's to steal? Cash is in trust. The risk here of predators is, as usual, low but finite. "Come and spot on Clapham Junction with me, I have humbugs!" Not entirely likely I think.
Yes, the caveat will only be see by those visiting the template. One could put a small link to the caveat in the template and meet all needs, I think. IN fact I'll do that thing.
Tim Trent Talk to me 16:20, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Actually I won't. I can't! What a delightful mess! Tim Trent Talk to me 16:20, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Aaaaaaagh! -- EdJogg 17:24, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
There is no point removing the year from this template, as it will cease to serve any purpose! What you need is a modified one that counts down to your entered birthday. Should be a 'simple' matter of inverting the calculations to show the time remaining rather than time elapsed... :o)
No, I'm not familiar with the maths parser functions either, but there is some kind of countdown facility available -- have a look at the 'Railfan Convention' template.
EdJogg 17:32, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps we could ask our template king Slambo? --BG7 18:06, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Oh, happy birthday. You share the date with my son. Tim Trent Talk to me 13:51, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. Now, I better get ready for a massive birthday... yes, you guessed it: Train Spotting World's 1st Birthday!!!. I've got a few ideas for the 14th, except i'm skiing. Any takers? (P.S., when's Planes? And, WE HAVE AN ACTIVE USER!!!) BG7 13:53, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Happy Bday.. I try to forget mine but I realize not everyone's a scrooge about it.. lol --DP67 (talk/contribs) 06:34, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Ho-hum...so you're 205 years old, eh? That probably qualifies you as our oldest editor! Did you meet Trevithick on your travels?
...Perhaps the template needs a little debugging? Have fun! EdJogg 09:53, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Help!

{{helpme}} This is a request for help at Planes. The Terminal is open for business, however i can't get the table on the main page or the template with the sections on into a proper table, with lines etc.

They have a mutual links page at http: //www.buythomasthetankengine.co.uk/links.php (I split the link to make it inactive here). If you feel appropriate please do ask them to link to the TtTE portal here :)

Tim Trent Talk to me 17:49, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Yes I will do. Personally, i'm against advertising, especially if they don't list us. I might use a bit of blackmail (your links will be removed/your account will be blocked) aswell - they wont want to lose custom! (I know my station signs, which my dad finally approved btw, doesnt!).
BG7 17:59, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

A Question...

Hey, Bluegoblin. I've got a question or two for you. 1: Have you ever heard of Facebook? 2: If so, do you have a Facebook account?

Thanks! --DalekX 00:34, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Dalek,
Yes and yes!
Hmmm... wanna add me as a friend?
BG7 11:34, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
Sure. It'd kinda easy to find me. I used the same name on Facebook as I did on TSW/SW/Wiki. But, it's a bit longer. on Facebook, my name is Dalek X-terminate.
See ya on Facebook! --DalekX 01:12, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
Ok, will do!
Oh and you ok to ship the TJ tommorrow?
Ta,
BG7 10:24, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
I will certainly deliver the journal. See ya! --DalekX 21:18, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
Um, Bluegoblin, somebody named "Dalek Sec asked me to be thier friend on Facebook. Was that you? --DalekX 22:00, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
No... it wasn't me. They probably saw a network you're in?!?!
BG7 13:58, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, maybe. actually, eh probably just saw my name, (Dalek X-terminate) and added me to his friends because he likes the Daleks. BTW, have you found me on Facebook yet?

Infobox

Hi, sorry I haven't been too active lately, my monitor on my windoze box has been playing up and I've been pretty busy updating my Linux box which has turned out to be a nightmare. I wound up having to reinstall and reconfigure everything. I guess that's what you get when you procrastinate and wait till they end support to upgrade.. lol What part of the infobox is confusing? which parts need to be removed or changed to fit in better? --DP67 (talk/contribs) 00:35, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Hmmm... i'll have a think later on... i'm not sure at the moment! Let me have a bigger play, but i'll drop you a version of the docs with stikeout stuff for what's not needed, and bold italic stuff for what is!

Ship Spotting World

Yo BG7, can I help launch SSW? See ya, --S.C.Rf 13:01, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

PS: Love your model railway. Mine doesn't have a name, I just think I'll call it "Sodor 2"

Thanks for the comment on my railway!
ShipSpottingWorld - it's probably not going to be launched until later this year, but yes, sure you can! It will be very tedious, and I suggest you get some practise over here by creating any articles that are currently red-links. It will also help if you are an admin. Now that Requests for Adminship is online, i suggest you read the things for why you want to be an admin, and take part in some. I will then nominate you when I think you're ready!
THanks,
BG7 13:04, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
I copied the citation needed article here. Does that count
--S.C.Rf 15:15, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes it does... but one slight problem - we're not Wikipedia. Any articles you do copy in should named Trains:xxx, and links adjusted accordingly - i've done it for now though! It's a large learning curve, but you'll get it eventually! That page actually wants to go to SpottingWorld, as it's a "policy", and therfore doesn't need to be at each individual SpottingWorld.
Thanks,

Re:Hello!

Hi, thanks for the welcome dude. I didn't know where to reply to your questions so I decided to answer them on your talk page if that isn't any trouble. In order:

  • I'm more into boats (ocean liners) but I do like trains. Notably Thomas The Tank Engine, not exectly the show but the long history it has from when steam engines were still around. Plus I like the Central Pacific railway, for its locomotives such as Jupiter, Gov. Stanford and C.P. Huntington.
  • I'm not really interested in how you have colorful signatures but I think I'll manage, since I just have to read what you said to S.C.Ruffeyfan when he asked you.

But I'll keep in mind to ask you about something regarding this site. Thanks again. Driveus 10:46, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Bizarre! They see you as a sock puppet of someone with a whole slew of sock puppets?

Doesn't affect anything here, a good user is a good user, but, well, how weird!

This may help. But WP is WP. One should probably not care about wikipolitics. Tim Trent Talk to me 08:57, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
The more I look at this the weirder it becomes. Since you plain do not have time to be all the people you are accused of being and study for GCSEs I can see that they are barking mad. I think I would ignore them. They are being very silly people. Tim Trent Talk to me 15:32, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
"Crikey!"
Just for the sake of history, the matter has now been resolved at WP, and BG7 has been exonerated (found to be not at fault).

Wikipolitics is amazing. We must NEVER let this place become like that place! Glad to have been some small service in making them think over there! Tim Trent Talk to me 23:31, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello BG7, I'm sorry about the advertising... I've never been in trouble on the internet before and I don't want to start now, and I didn't really think it was going to get a bunch of people to join, just the ones I invited. I see your point.

You're welcome to join my forum if you like, (link's on my user page), and it'd be great to be wiki-friends... What do you say?
