GER Class C53

From TrainSpottingWorld, for Rail fans everywhere

The Great Eastern Railway Class C53, classified as Class J70 by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) was a class of 0-6-0 tramway locomotive used on the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway from the 1930s to the 1950s. They were designed by James Holden. They replaced earlier GER Class G15 0-4-0 of similar appearance.

No Great Eastern C53's survived, but there are plans to build a replica of a GER C53 Locomotive which will represent the Toby character (see below) for preservation along with a replica of a G15 which proceeded the C53.

In fiction

Toby the Tram Engine is based on the J70.

The J70 was the inspiration for Toby the Tram Engine in the The Railway Series by W.V. Awdry.
