User talk:Class91

From TrainSpottingWorld, for Rail fans everywhere

Class91, welcome to Train Spotting World

If this is the first time you've used a wiki you may have a few questions. Most of the answers are obvious. To learn to edit, why not just dive in? At the foot of the editing window there is a help link. This opens in a new window and gives you a good overview of wiki syntax and stuff.

If you would like some introductory help, look at being adopted by an experienced user

There are very few rules here. The best summary is:

  • Respect other people's Copyright
  • Behave to others as you would like them to behave to you
  • Do no harm

This is not an encyclopedia. Pages here do not need to comply with encyclopaedic notions or citations or neutrality. Just dive in and start.

It's always worth having a look at Station announcements every so often, too.

One of the first things you might want to do is to place {{talktome}} at the top of your talk page (this page) above this welcome message. Taking heed of what it says will make it much easier for you to follow discussions on talk pages.

And while you browse the site, and especially when you've created something truly worthwhile, why not Digg and also tag on del.icio.us – the tools are in the left hand menu. The more Diggs (etc) we have the better, because Diggs and del.icio.us links add to our findability. The best way to find out about them is to click on the tool. Each is different and each gives you the chance to "rate" any article here. Or anywhere else come to that!

Best yet you have a Spotting World Blog if you want it. Have a look at your User page. There is a link to let you create your blog. This is part of what Spotting World does for you. Or just go to blogs.spottingworld.com. You can use your blog for any lawful purpose. It's yours to do with as you like. Anyone can read your blog once you create it, but only you can write to it.

There is also a live chat room - see the left hand menu

Is Fan Fiction your thing? Check out our Fan Fiction area for further information.

We have several workforces online to collaborate in editing articles of various different topics. Go to Trains:Workforces for more information. You may also create or propose a new workforce. Remember TrainSpottingWorld is what you want it to be.

If you need help with anything, try the FAQs or the Help pages, or pop over to the Station Cafe, and ask there.

And don't forget to tell your friends about us!

For the latest goings on, take a look at the current issue of our newsletter, The Transport Journal here. You can subscribe for the newsletter to be delivered to your user talk page here.

Good to see you

And great work you are doing importing stuff, especially with the construction template on it. Our m,antra is "simplify, simplify, simplify" when working with an procedural thing. And it's really hard to simplfy things!

We want the community we build, if you follow me. A WP clone would be a mistake, but they make a great "jump off point". Lucklit we may be as POV as we wish (until the community changes that, naturally!)

Thank you. I won't be here very often though. Only on public holidays and possibly weekends. Class91 18:13, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Duplicate image resolved

Image:APT.jpg, which you uploaded, was a duplicate of Image:Apt 370004 - euston - 13-02-1980.jpg. I've substituted as needed and deleted the duplicate. Since a lot of the images and content here is still a copy of WP materials, you might find that an image you want to upload from there is already here under the same filename. Thanks.Class91 09:26, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Welcome!

Sorry for the delay in this, I've been very busy!

Thanks for getting stuck in, We like that! :-D!

If you have any qs, please ask me or any other sysop. Please join some Workforces aswell if you're interested - i've noticed you've added some stuff at UKR.

Thanks,

dollar strings

I do need to make sure that what you have seen as a typo truly does cause an error. Please can you explain what you see in MediaWiki:Whitelistedittext that appears to you to be a typo, and under what circumstances you see it?

Have you tried this in the correct mode by being logged out and trying to edit a non protected page? If so what do you see that is incorrect?

Please note that reading the page "as an article" displays the dollar string, not the value it takes when invoked.

Policy

Hi. I noted you have re-added "We should not introduce user classes or any type of bureaucracy." into the Policy sandbox. I still have issues with this text, but mainly because I do not understand what you are trying to say. Could you elaborate, please, so we can tweak the wording appropriately? Thanks

Can you tell me what the issue you have is. I just want to see if you're interpreting it in the way I mean it. Class91 17:48, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
OK, what is a 'user class'? Are we saying we are not going to provide further education for our users?
'any type of bureaucracy' is a very sweeping statement. This definition shows five different meanings, two of which could be implying organisational structure (and hence we could not possibly avoid 'any type of bureaucracy', since that would imply anarchy!) whereas I think you are actually suggesting the avoiding of meaning 3: "An administrative system in which the need or inclination to follow rigid or complex procedures impedes effective action". So, if that's your meaning, we should state it in as many words, especially as that will mean I don't have to cut-and-paste "bureaucracy" again (as I cannot spell it!).
EdJogg 18:17, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
My comments on the matter are, even though i have no idea how to word it, is this:
"we are trying to avoid the heavy bureaucracy that is experienced at some sites, and therefore there is just 1 class. 'What about sysops?' you say? Well, sysops are simply here to ensure we have a friendly community and to perform deletion and protection tasks. Admins aren't above the rest of us. Their job is a task, not a privelege. link to Trains:Adminiship for more info!"
So what do we think?

I see your point. Things like this just worry me - [1], [2], wp:WP:ARBCOM, wp:WP:MEDCOM. No need for politics on a wiki. We have enough of that in our daily lives offline. Were a community building a fan site for rail fans, were not a political experiment, a cult, a formal organisation, a recreation of the offline world etc. Basically Im trying to say we're not what wikipedia some how ended up doing to an extent. In other words, keep it simple. Class91 19:16, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
Have a look at the latest version of User:Dp67/Sandboxes/Policy. I went there to reword the disputed sentence according to the accepted meanings above, but 'simplifying' got the better of me, and most of it has been heavilly edited (with the exception of the Lead and the Copyright bit).
However, despite my best endeavours, the page still looks like it is the result of a collision between two others. This page should provide an overview of all the policies, linking to individual sub-pages providing the detail -- for example, there is obviously one needed for copyright, and, perhaps, a second for Free Use images.

Thanks. If you don't mind, I think some of what you added should be guidelines. Class91 00:56, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
