- 1837 – The Long Island Rail Road extends regular service to Hicksville, New York.[1]
- 1870 – The New York and Hempstead Plains Rail Road, later part of the Long Island Rail Road, is incorporated in New York.[1]
- 1920 – The United States Railroad Administration returns control of the nation's railroad system to the railroad companies involved.
- 1936 – Nearly 4,000 people are moved to higher ground via the Johnstown Inclined Plane in Pennsylvania to escape massive flooding in the area.
- 1937 – Southern Pacific Railroad inaugurates the Coast Daylight passenger train pulled by its new GS-2 class of steam locomotives between Los Angeles and San Francisco, California.
- 1955 – The eastbound California Zephyr, while traveling through Ruby Canyon which crosses the border between Utah and Colorado, sees its first on-train birth as Peter Zars is born.
