From TrainSpottingWorld, for Rail fans everywhere

TobytheTramEngine, welcome to Train Spotting World

If this is the first time you've used a wiki you may have a few questions. Most of the answers are obvious. To learn to edit, why not just dive in? At the foot of the editing window there is a help link. This opens in a new window and gives you a good overview of wiki syntax and stuff.

There are very few rules here. The best summary is:

  • Respect other people's Copyright
  • Behave to others as you would like them to behave to you
  • Do no harm

This is not an encyclopaedia. Pages here do not need to comply with encyclopaedic notions or citations or neutrality. Just dive in and start.

It's always worth having a look at Station announcements every so often, too.

One of the first things you might want to do is to place {{talktome}} at the top of your talk page (this page) above this welcome message. Taking heed of what it says will make it much easier for you to follow discussions on talk pages.

And while you browse the site, and especially when you've created something truly worthwhile, why not Digg and also tag on del.icio.us – the tools are in the left hand menu. The more Diggs (etc) we have the better, because Diggs and del.icio.us links add to our findability. The best way to find out about them is to click on the tool. Each is different and each gives you the chance to "rate" any article here. Or anywhere else come to that!

"Snap", the little link preview window, has options in it that you can tailor to meet your needs. If you like it, stay with the defaults. If not then you can turn it off easily

Best yet you have a Spotting World Blog if you want it. Have a look at your User page. There is a link to let you create your blog. This is part of what Spotting World does for you. Or just go to blogs.spottingworld.com. You can use your blog for any lawful purpose. It's yours to do with as you like. Anyone can read your blog once you create it, but only you can write to it.

There is also a live chat room - see the left hand menu

Is Fan Fiction your thing? If it is, check out our Fan Fiction area. Please make sure all Fan Fiction is prefixed with "FanFic:" with no intervening space. An example is FanFic:Thomas and Friends Wooden Railway.

Any questions, please ask any user on their talk page.

And please tell all your friends about us

TtTE&F Videos ++

Welcome! Now you're here you can do pretty much what you like with the video pages. Currently we have Thomas and Friends video releases, which was deleted from WP ages ago. I suggest you do split it into two, or more, new pages, with the current page providing links to the UK release page, the US release page, Calling All Engines, etc, etc

There is a Thomas and Friends Portal, which has a link from the Main Page, which will allow you to find everything easily. The other pages will be familiar to you, as they were copied from WP either in February (some) or (remainder) June 2007. What will not be familiar to you are the 'Fan Fic' pages, which have been introduced here in order to channel enthusiastic editors appropriately...

Hi again. I have added an introduction to Thomas and Friends video releases indicating that there are two new pages in existence. Obviously you absolutely do not have to do what I say, but may I suggest that you use this page as a 'parent' and link to all the other video pages from it (I presume Calling All Engines, etc count as video releases, and hence should be linked from the parent). As you do so, I suggest you remove content from the parent page to avoid unnecessary duplication, which just creates maintenance headaches.

The fact that you have created new pages to replace the single page is not a problem. You do not need to apologise! I'm just making you aware of what's here! Please just relax and go about your editing!!

Copying from external sources such as Wikipedia

When copying from Wikipedia, know that the licence there allows such copies, provided they are acknowledged. Look at {{From Wikipedia}} and simply add that to the head of relevant talk pages. This whole project started out as a copy of relevant WP pages, licenced correctly (example at Talk:Georgia Midland Railway), and is diverging rapidly. You are doing fine :) Tim Trent 21:03, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

As you see, we are fanatical about copyright, but the freedoms here are enormous. I'm sure the community here will create its own rules, but I very much hope they will be far simpler than those "elsewhere", where editing is somehow not always fun. Tim Trent 21:12, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
