Schneider Electric is a large, global company of French origin. It dates back to 1836, when two brothers, Joseph and Adolphe Schneider took over a troubled foundry at Le Creusot, initially going into armaments, but in 1891 they began to exploit the new electricity market.

In the first part of the 20th century, Schneider associated itself with Westinghouse Systems who were, by then, a major international electrical group. The group began manufacturing electric motors and locomotives. After the Second World War, the armaments interests were abandoned in favour of electrical engineering, iron and steel works. The company remained in this sector until the early 1980s.

In 1981, Groupe Schneider separated, focusing on the electrical and controls industry. This was followed by strategic acquisitions of Telemecanique (1988), Square D (1991) and Merlin Gerin (1992) and it is these brands that are the core products of the company's offering.

In 1999, Groupe Schneider was renamed Schneider Electric, in order to give it more identity. The Lexel group was also acquired that year.

From 2000 onwards, the company has grown into a world leader in Power and Control solutions through further acquisitions, namely Power Measurement (2005), MGE UPS Systems, Clipsal, TAC, Nulec, Andover Controls and Citect (2006) and American Power Conversion (acquisition planned for early 2007 upon shareholder approval).
