- January 16 – The Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, the oldest part of what would become Chicago and North Western Railway, is chartered in Illinois to connect Chicago and the lead mining community of Galena, Illinois, on the Mississippi River.

- February 5 – The Jackson and Brandon Railroad and Bridge Company is incorporated in Alabama.[1]

- March 14 – The Philadelphia and Delaware County Rail-Road is reorganized and renamed to become the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad.

- December 21 – The Western and Atlantic Railroad is founded in Georgia to build a railroad connecting Atlanta to Chattanooga, Tennessee.
