Schneebergbahn
From TrainSpottingWorld, for Rail fans everywhere
The Schneebergbahn is a rack railway leading from the small town of Puchberg in Lower Austria up to a pleateau beneath the Schneeberg, with 2076 m the highest mountain of Lower Austria.
The line is about 10 km long and has a rail gauge of 1 m (3 ft 33⁄8 in) and uses the Abt rack system to overcome a height difference of about 1200 m. The Schneebergbahn began its operation in 1897. Although it was originally operated with steam locomotives, modern diesel locomotives have also been in operation since 1999.
