– Pennsylvania Railroad begins construction to electrify its mainline between Paoli and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. - 1940 – The Boston, Revere Beach and Lynn Railroad in Massachusetts is abandoned.
- 1962 – DC Transit ends streetcar service in Washington, D.C.
- 1973 – The State of Massachusetts purchases the Attleboro/Stoughton Line in Massachusetts for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.

– The United States federal government announces that it will not provide money for a $400 million extension to the Las Vegas Monorail system in Nevada.
