- January 28 – Amtrak introduces the Inter-American passenger train connecting Chicago to Laredo, Texas, via St. Louis, Missouri, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Dallas, Texas.

- March 2 – The Copper Range Railroad in Michigan abandons all rail operations.[1]
