- 1853 – The Toledo, Norwalk and Cleveland Railroad opens, completing a chain of railroad connections between Chicago and Boston.[1]
- 1874 – Baltimore and Ohio Railroad completes construction of its Alexandria Branch to Shepherd's Landing, Virginia.[2]
- 1880 – The Denver Pacific Railway, Kansas Pacific Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad merge, with the resulting company retaining the Union Pacific name.
- 1902 – The first railroad station in Lenox, Massachusetts, is destroyed by fire.[3]
- 1912 – The Utah Railway is incorporated in Utah as the Utah Coal Railway Company.[4]
- 2005 – Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway introduces a new corporate logo that replaces the railroad's verbose name with BNSF Railway.
