- 1836 – The Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, the oldest part of what would become Chicago and North Western Railway, is chartered in Illinois to connect Chicago and the lead mining community of Galena, Illinois, on the Mississippi River.
- 1916 – Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway introduces the Scout service between Chicago and Los Angeles.
- 1933 – Pennsylvania Railroad completes electrification of the line between New Brunswick and Trenton, New Jersey, giving the railroad a completely electrified line from New York City to Philadelphia.
- 1934 – The United States Patent and Trademark Office assigns U.S. Patent 1,944,106 , "Method and product of electric welding", describing the process of shotwelding which was used in the production of the Pioneer Zephyr, to the Budd Company.
- 1969 – Penn Central introduces Metroliner passenger service between New York City and Washington, DC.
