- 1845 – In a ride from Relay, Maryland, to Washington, D.C., James K. Polk becomes the first U.S. President Elect to ride a train (Andrew Jackson became the first sitting U.S. President to ride a train in 1833).[1]
- 1854 – Job A. Edson, president of Kansas City Southern Railway 1905-1918 and 1920-1928, is born (d. 1928).[2]
- 1974 – Amtrak introduces the Black Hawk passenger train service between Chicago, Illinois, and Dubuque, Iowa.
- 1975 – Grand Trunk Western Railway discontinues freight service on the Lakeland to Jackson, Michigan, line.[3]
- 2005 – The San Diego Electric Railway Association in California salvages the body shell of car 357 (formerly of the Bellingham, Washington, streetcar system) from a Centre City San Diego restaurant site where it had been used as a "dining room" since 1972.[4]
