- February 14 – In a ride from Relay, Maryland, to Washington, D.C., James K. Polk becomes the first U.S. President Elect to ride a train (Andrew Jackson became the first sitting U.S. President to ride a train in 1833).[1]

- March 13 – A meeting is held in the courthouse of Navan, Ireland, to protest plans by Thomas Brodigan to build a railway between Navan and Dublin.[2]
