Highland Railway Yankee Tanks

From TrainSpottingWorld, for Rail fans everywhere

In 1891 Dubs & Co. of Glasgow completed two locomotives of an order for five. They were ordered by the Uruguay Eastern Railway. However, due to financial problems the order was cancelled and the engines were offered to the Highland Railway. The Highland Railway 'Yankee' tanks were officially known as Class 'P' and the first two engines were given the numbers 101 and 102. The remaining three engines were numbered 11, 14 and 15.

They were outside cylindered 4-4-0 side tanks with enclosed cabs.

Five were put into service at some point between 1872 and 1892. No 11 was withdrawn in 1924. The others transferred to LMS with numbers 15013-17 and were painted in crimson lake.

In appearance they were somewhat unlike other HR designs of the period, not having the classic Allan framing and sweep of plating from the widest part of the smokebox to the cylinders.

The final locomotives retired in 1934.
