Parts of the cafe

These were the votes we got:

  • Buffet Car: 3
  • Round House 6

*Station Cafe 6

  • The Works 4
  • Refreshment Room 2
  • Left Luggage 1
  • Goods Yard 2

Now we need to work out the right sub-pages, colleague pages, call them what you will.

The Works has a technical feel. Round House has a lot of votes and is an indoor car park for engines. So where are we going? What looks right? What works best?

Striked thru Station Cafe - already used.
'The Works can be the technical side, Left Luggage can be Misc, Roundhouse can be used for posts specifically about locos or railways. Any more ideas?

We're so close

I'm having a little challenge distinguishing Left Luggage from Station Cafe itself at present. Thoughts, chapps and chapesses? Tim Trent 15:35, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

This is the third go I've had at answering your queries this afternoon!
My suggestion is that 'Station Cafe' becomes a Portal (effectively), a 'front page' giving guidance and instructions. 'Left Luggage' then becomes the only miscellaneous page.
The {{Stationcafe}} template should only be used on the Station Cafe (Portal) page. Sub-pages require a MUCH simpler template, with NO introductory text and NO second table of 'where to go links'. They need a very simple template which provides a link back to the front page and cross-links to the other sub-pages (and FAQs, Help, etc). (Obviously, this template will also provide the other generic stuff, such as cats). Introductory text can be done on a per-subpage basis (as I added for The Works).
Hope that helps.

You get the house point!
If it is to be a portal it needs prettifying (outside my skillset). Good idea, we just need to implement it
Simpler templates - total agreement, just too headachy today to knit one. I suppose we could get fancy and have a conditional single template... Beyond my skill though.

Maybe the answer is to extract the current template text and drop it in the Portal page (as it will only be used on one page, a template is a bit excessive!). Then the template can be drastically pruned without modifying the other subpages again. (I should be doing other stuff really -- I've spent too long here today already!)
The 'Portal' page will not need too much prettifying -- at least, not yet, as there are many other help pages and cats that are in a much worse state!

Closer to it. I've substed the template on THIS article's page and started a drastic simplification of the template. We should all join in :) That way we can make a really enormous mess! Tim Trent 17:35, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Station Cafe (All)

Having compared with the WP equivalent, this page needs to be protected and avoid a '+' tab too. Users need to access the individual pages to post comments and queries. The 'All' page is merely an echo.

EdJogg 16:19, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

It is protected. Good call. Hmm, my brain failed in the middle of <noincludes> and <includeonlies>, which are obviously what are needed. I rather hoped it could go in the template, but I think it has to go in the individual pages. If you don't get to it remind me, but not today. Tim Trent 16:25, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Simplify from WP

The Wp system of village portal is complex and designed for use with a large community such as theirs. With our smaller community (It always will be smaller), I don't feel the need for such a complex system with 5 sections. It is clear that it is too complex also by the fact that messages here are unnoticed for days. It should be just as simple to use as a user talk page. Instead of borrowing ideas from WP on this one, lets be creative and create something to suit our needs for a small community and not theirs. Thanks :). Tbo 157 12:31, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Please comment at Trains:Station Cafe (Mess Room)#Simplicity. Thanks. Tbo 157 12:46, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
