- January 8 – A West Seattle streetcar of the Municipal Street Railway falls off the Spokane Street trestle, killing three and injuring many more.[1]
- January 27 – Pennsylvania Railroad begins construction to electrify its mainline between Paoli and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

- March 1 – Southern Pacific Railroad inaugurates the Coast Daylight passenger train pulled by its new GS-2 class of steam locomotives between Los Angeles and San Francisco, California.

- May 18 – Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway re-equips the Super Chief passenger train, which allows the train to reach an average of 60.8 mph over its entire route between Chicago and Los Angeles.
