- January 13 – Santa Fe Railroad locomotive 1275 (a Baldwin-built 4-6-2) leads the Saint out of San Diego bound for La Grande Station in Los Angeles, and derails as it descends the Sorrento Grade due to excessive speed; the engineer and 21 passengers are killed.[1]
