- 1833 – The United States Congress diverts a land grant that was passed in 1827 authorizing canal construction in Illinois to grant the land for railroad construction instead.[1]
- 1846 – The Junction Railroad, a predecessor of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, is chartered in Ohio.[2]
- 1893 – The Durham and Charlotte Railroad is chartered in North Carolina.
- 1888 – The New River Plateau Railway, a predecessor of Norfolk and Western Railroad, is incorporated in Virginia.[3]
- 1970 – The Great Northern Railway, Northern Pacific Railway, Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway are merged to form Burlington Northern Railroad.[4]
- 1973 – The Copper Range Railroad in Michigan abandons all rail operations.[5]
