- 1931 – Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway discontinues the Scout passenger train service connecting Chicago and Los Angeles as a result of the economic effects of the Great Depression.
- 1948 – The Rock Island and Southern Pacific railroads introduce a new all-lightweight (streamlined) consist for the Golden State passenger train service between Chicago and Los Angeles.
- 1959 – Strasburg Rail Road begins passenger train operations as a heritage railway.
- 1987 – An Amtrak passenger train pulled by two EMD AEM-7 electric locomotives collides with a Conrail freight train in Chase, Maryland, killing 16 people.
