- 1873 – Chesapeake and Ohio Railway completes construction of its line connecting Richmond, Virginia to the Ohio River.[1][2]
- 1884 – La Fayette Wilson Page is awarded U.S. Patent 292504 for an "Animal chaser"; a device that allows an engineer to spray water from a steam locomotive's boiler through a nozzle mounted on the front of the locomotive to clear livestock from the track.[1]
- 1956 – Virginian Railway discontinues passenger train service.[1]
- 1980 – Milwaukee Road discontinues all service on the Pacific Extension west of Miles City, Montana.[1]
