- 1882 – California Southern Railroad, a subsidiary of the Santa Fe, begins regular passenger and freight service between its National City terminus and Fallbrook Junction, just north of Oceanside, California.[1]
- 1919 – Tacoma Municipal Railway in Washington begins streetcar operations.[2]
- 1991 – Frank Turpin steps down from the president and CEO positions of Alaska Railroad.[3]
- 1997 – Massive flooding in the Feather River Canyon forces Union Pacific Railroad to close the former Western Pacific mainline through the canyon.[4]
