- 1868 – The Hicksville and Cold Springs Branch Railroad, on Long Island, New York, is extended to Huntington.[1]
- 1903 – Granville T. Woods is awarded U.S. Patent 718183 , "Electric-Railway System", outlining a new method for current collection by third rail.[2]
- 1913 – Santa Fe Railroad locomotive 1275 (a Baldwin-built 4-6-2) leads the Saint out of San Diego bound for La Grande Station in Los Angeles, and derails as it descends the Sorrento Grade due to excessive speed; the engineer and 21 passengers are killed.[3]
- 1949 – The San Diego Transit System in California borrows $720,000 for the purchase of additional new buses, and makes an application to the State Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to discontinue streetcar service.
- 1982 – The first fatal accident occurs on the Washington Metro in Washington, DC.[4]
