- 1854 – Pennsylvania Railroad opens the route through the Horseshoe Curve west of Altoona, Pennsylvania, reducing travel time between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia from 3½ days to just 13 hours.[1]
- 1865 – The Chicago and North Western Railway and Galena and Chicago Union Railroad merge.
- 1870 – Groundbreaking ceremonies are held near Duluth, Minnesota, for the construction of Northern Pacific Railway.[2]
- 1984 – The state of Michigan purchases 342 miles of track and right of way from Penn Central.[3]
