- 1825
– George William Featherstonhaugh (pronounced fen-shaw), of Duanesburgh, New York, runs a newspaper notice announcing the formation of the Mohawk and Hudson Rail Road Company. - 1872 – The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, building westward from Newton, Kansas, reaches the border between Kansas and Colorado.[1]
- 1879
– Southern Pacific Railroad puts the Solano train ferry into operation in the San Francisco Bay, California.[2] - 1917 – The United States federal government takes control of American railroads under the United States Railroad Administration for World War I, as authorized by the President two days earlier.
- 1995 – Union Pacific Railroad operates its 50,000th coal train out of Wyoming's Powder River Basin.[3]
