Manchester Pullman

From TrainSpottingWorld, for Rail fans everywhere

The Manchester Pullman was a first class only Pullman passenger train operated by British Rail, marketed at business travellers. The service operated between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly stations in England, UK and offered an at-seat restaurant service to all passengers. It was hauled by electric locomotives (usually British Rail Class 86). It replaced the Midland Pullman (operated by the diesel Blue Pullman units) upon completion of the electrification of the West Coast Main Line from London Euston to Manchester.

The train consisted of specially built British Rail Mark 2 carriages in a special Pullman livery, pearl grey with blue window surrounds (a reversal of the normal British Rail InterCity livery of the 1970s). The carriages were built in the late 1960s and were replaced by Mark 3 carriages in the mid-1980s, when non-Pullman standard class carriages were also added.

After the withdrawal of the Yorkshire Pullman and Hull Pullman trains in 1978, the Manchester Pullman remained as the only Pullman train on British Rail. The West Coast Main Line InterCity services were taken over by Virgin Trains in the 1990s and the Manchester Pullman name was dropped.
