- December 20 – In a test run, the Pennsylvania Railroad operates the UAC Turbotrain at 170.8 mph on the Northeast Corridor between New Brunswick and Trenton, New Jersey, setting a new speed record for a production train.[1]
- December 29 – The first steam locomotive powered train operates at Illinois Railway Museum using a Shay locomotive.
