The South Central Railway operates various trains between different stations providing a well-developed and interconnected railway route. The South Central Railway zone, which has its head-quaters at Secunderabad, covers the whole of Andhra Pradesh state and parts of the state of Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Train nomenclature

Each railway route in India has its own distinctive name, usually evocative of the places it connects or passes through. Usually, these names are taken from those of landmarks, landforms, rivers, famous people, or the important temples and shrines that lie along the route. Some important railway routes managed by the SCR are:

  1. Godavari Express between Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam is named after the South Indian river Godavari.
  2. Telangana express between Secunderabad and Sirpur Kagaznagar is named after the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh.
  3. Hussainsagar Express between Hyderabad and Mumbai is named after the famous lake in the city of Hyderabad.
  4. Andhra Pradesh Express between Hyderabad and New Delhi is named after the state of Andhra Pradesh.
  5. Simhapuri express between Secunderabad and Gudur is named after the historical name of the town of Nellore.
  6. Charminar express between Hyderabad and Chennai is named after the Charminar, a landmark of Hyderabad city.
  7. Krishna express between Nizamabad and Tirupati is named after the South Indian river Krishna.
  8. Ratnachal express between Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam is named after the Ratnachalam hills in Andhra Pradesh.
  9. Prashanti express between Visakhapatnam and Bangalore is named after Prashanthi Nilayam, the ashrama of Sathya Sai Baba at Puttaparthi
  10. Nagarjuna express between Secunderabad and Tenali is named after the famous Indian scholar Nagarjuna who lived in the Guntur Region.
  11. Padmavati express between Secunderabad and Tirupati is named after the Goddess Padmavati, whose temple stands in Tirupati.
  12. Palnadu express between Guntur City and Secunderabad is named after the region of Pallava Nadu in Guntur District.
  13. Pinakini Express between Vijayawada and Chennai is named after the mythical name of the South Indian river Pennar.
  14. Visakha Express between Secunderabad and Bhubaneshwar is named after the popular buddhist follower Visakha who resided in Vishakapatnam
  15. Golconda express between Secunderabad and Guntur City is named after the famous Golconda fort situated in Hyderabad
  16. Falaknuma Express between Secunderabad and Howrah after the Falaknuma Palace at older Hyderabad
  17. Sathavahana superfast Express between Secunderabad and Vijayawada after the Sathavahana kingdom in Andhra
  18. Ajanta Express between Secunderabad and Manmad after the famous Ajanta Caves in Maharashtra connecting Shirdi to Hyderabad
  19. [Janmabhoomi] Express between Visakhapatnam and Tenali via Vijayawada after the Janmabhoomi development program conducted during The [Chandrababu Naidu] reign
  20. Venkatadri Expresss between Kacheguda and Chittoor after the Venkatachalam Hill range located at Tirupati
  21. Sarkar Express between Kakinada and Chennai remembering the British rule over the coastal Andhra
  22. Goutami Express between Secunderabad and Kakinada after the river Goutami
  23. Sabari Express linking Secundarabad to Thiruvananthapuram Central after the highly principled Sabarimala deeksha/yatra
  24. Devagiri Express- Mumbai CST-Secunderabad over Nizamabad route
