Gainesville, Jefferson and Southern Railroad

The Gainesville, Jefferson and Southern Railroad was chartered in 1872, and on its opening day, March 8, 1884, consisted of a 55-mile track from Gainesville, Georgia to Monroe, Georgia. An 13-mile eastbound branch from Belmont stopped in Jefferson, Georgia. The G.J.&S. R.R. was consolidated with the Walton Railroad three days later, which extended the line 10 miles south from Monroe to Social Circle, Georgia.

Bankruptcy forced the railroad into receivership in 1897, and in 1904, most of the track was sold in foreclosure to the newly formed Gainesville Midland Railway. G.M. R.R. extended the tracks from Jefferson to Athens, Georgia before being sold to Seaboard Air Line Railway in 1959. CSX Corporation now owns these rails.
