- March 5 – Amtrak introduces the San Joaquins passenger train service between Bakersfield and the San Francisco Bay area.
- March 7 – The Santa Fe directs Amtrak to discontinue use of the names Super Chief (which then becomes the Southwest Limited) and Texas Chief (which is renamed the Lone Star) due to a perceived reduction in the quality of service provided on the routes.
