- 1831 – George Pullman, founder of Pullman Company, is born in Brocton, New York.
- 1849 – The Pacific Railroad is chartered in Missouri to build a line from Pacific to Rolla, Missouri.
- 1852 – The Flushing Rail Road, a predecessor of the Long Island Rail Road, is chartered in New York.[1]
- 1866 – The Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac and Richmond and Petersburg Railroad Connection is chartered in Virginia to build a connection between its namesake lines.
- 1949 – California's Public Utilities Commission grants authority to the San Diego Transit System to abandon its remaining streetcar lines.
- 1971 – Penn Central publishes its last public passenger train timetable before the inauguration of Amtrak.
