- 1830 – Construction begins on the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company, which is now part of Norfolk Southern Railway.
- 1882 – The first train from Cincinnati, Ohio, on the Cincinnati Northern Railway, departs for Dayton, Ohio.
- 1911 – A snowstorm deposits more than nine feet of snow on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, halting rail traffic on the Manistique and Lake Superior Railroad.[1]
- 1916 – Pennsylvania Railroad suspends its Federal Express passenger train service due to freight congestion on the New Haven Railroad.
- 2003 – Following its purchase of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad and its subsidiaries, operations begin on the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway in New England, Quebec and New Brunswick.[2]
