- 1885 – Long Island Rail Road begins piggyback freight service carrying farm wagons loaded with potatoes from farms on Long Island to New York City.[1]
- 1956 – New York Central Railroad begins test runs of General Motors Electro-Motive Division's Aerotrain between Chicago and Detroit.[2]
- 1985 – Ceremonies are held in Nenana and Seward, Alaska to mark the official transfer of the Alaska Railroad ownership to the state of Alaska.[3]
- 2006 – A northbound Virginia Railway Express train on CSX tracks derails (pictured) near Quantico, Virginia, as a result of a worn and chipped switch point rail.[4]
