- 1867 – The Central Branch Railroad, later to become the Central Branch of Missouri Pacific Railroad, completes construction of its 60th mile of track.[1]
- 1895 – The Pittsburgh McKeesport and Youghiogheny Railroad, a predecessor of the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad, extends its Monongahela Division from Belle Vernon to Fayette City, Pennsylvania.[2]
- 1897 – The McCloud River Railroad near Mount Shasta, California, is chartered.
- 1898 – 16 inches of snow fall over Michigan, and snow continues falling for about a week, producing 14-foot high drifts that shut down much of the railroad operations in the state; the Pere Marquette Railway car ferries remain docked in port at Ludington throughout the storm.[3]
- 1956 – The RDCs making up San Diegan train No. 82 derail in a high-speed accident at Redondo Junction, just south of the Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal, killing 30 and seriously injuring 117. This was the units' last run on the Surf Line.[4] The radio reports of this accident were one of the first major uses of the Sigalert.
