- 1890 – Newspaper reporter Nellie Bly departs San Francisco, California, aboard the Miss Nellie Bly Special passenger train chartered from Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
- 1942 – The original Norfolk Southern Railroad is reorganized as Norfolk Southern Railway.
- 1955 – Milwaukee Road discontinues through passenger train service on the Columbian.
